I do bleed country Doof. Molina's singing is great too though, "prefer" was probably a bit of a stretch. I love me a more classic country voice for sure. Molina is definitely in the Will Oldham/Matthew Houck class of more frail alt-country singers and I love that style too.

Seriously though that guy on The Old Black Hen is great. There's something about that classic country sound that I just swoon for. Might be my favorite here so far.

Also, I think this entry should be moved to the Magnolia Electric Co page. I was reading up and Molina retroactively said that Didn't It Rain was the last Songs: Ohia album, making this the first Magnolia Electric Co album.

Yeah, there's confusion over the classification.

My favourite three here are easily the first three, but there's not even close to a bad song. Have you listened to the bonus tracks?

Most people think Black Hen is the weakest here but I never bought into that.

The one with the chick is probably the weakest for me, not as keen on her vox.

And actually the closer is probanly my favorite more realistically. The first three are great too, every song is really. Not sure how to rate this yet though, I enjoy it a lot after two listens but it's gonna be a grower. Definitely feels like it's going to end up a favorite, which makes sense seeing as it's one of the most popular alt-country albums. It seems to have quite a bit of crossover success in the indie scene.

I imagine that's due to the people who are not country fans who listen to this since that's the one that's closest to straight-up country.

Haven't listened to the bonus tracks yet, the version on Spotify had like ten of them so I edited it down to 8 and will probably stick with that for now.

Also Doof what's your opinion on the Magnolia Electric Co stuff? It sounds like that stuff is more alt-country than the rest of the Songs: Ohia stuff, I might actually delve into that before working my way backwards.

I haven't listened to full albums of the Magnolia stuff, got into Molina before Sput and I was lazier with music, I'd just download a couple of songs I liked from each album in a big discog to make up a mixtape. Got a really good Molina playlist but should listen to the albums in full now

Doof I have a couple RYM friends who rate the MEC stuff as high or even higher than Songs: Ohia, I imagine it's gotta be quality too.

You know it's a great album when a different song strikes you every time - third go, it's Peoria Lunch Box Blues.

Doof I know you disagree but so far I'm preferring the back half of the album to be honest.

The first three and last two songs are the heart of the album for me. The other stuff is great but hasn't the same intensity.

Not that you'd want the same intensity throughout, but the peaks are the more intense stuff for me.

I believe 'Riding with the Ghost' (turn it up loud and remember this man drank himself into a ghost not so long after) is the best country rocker I've ever heard and 'Just Be Simple' is possibly the most perfect Molina song, that song just IS the man (the way he sings it...one of my favourite all time vocal performances).

'Riding with the Ghost' is so great, listening now - 'Now I made the change' hmmm, girly ghosty backing vocals don't believe you Jason...

It's all great, don't get me wrong. Obviously I can't relate to how "Molina" the songs are but I do feel there's something special there. This is yet another album I hadn't heard that is just absurdly to my taste. I think it might just take some more listens to really distinguish itself from all the other stuff I know in the genre.

The use of guest vocalists is a really neat idea, I haven't seen any other artists do that except in cases where the guest signifies a different character in an opera type album. Here it provides a really interesting variety and allows Molina to pull off styles he probably couldn't do as well on his own.

Boney, my version of the album has an acoustic demo second disc where Molina sings all the songs - I'm easygoing either way, think Molina would have performed them great too. Part of me likes the variety, part of me wonders about it being even more unified if he took them on. It's a 5 anyhow, always destined to be.

Chuck, for my tastes this is almost a pop album, just a really sad one. Hits my sweet spot dead on. Feels authentic, sounds fully committed, keeps that quality level jammed up on maximum. Can't fault this.

There's certainly an authenticity here.

The closer is really tugging at my heartstrings. With at title like "Hold On Magnolia" it just has to be a classic song...and it is. Perfection.
