Unintelligible? It's muddy, but you can hear everything - including the bass - perfectly fine. Fits their sound perfectly.

Well I gotta be honest, I never understood the BM thing with bad production "fitting the sound". Does that mean if the production is better it makes the music worse? It's always been a pet peeve of mine and seems unnecessary if you can actually pay for good production and mixing. The mix on Marrow is horrendous as well, like super high drums and super low bass so idk how that flatters any of the sounds. As far as I'm concerned I want to hear guitars (at least Agalloch guitars) more in the forefront compared to the drums, or at least at the same level

Production has never really bothered me (unless its actually painful to listen to)

But the right balance for me is a nice organic sound, without being too polished and sterile. But overall not too fussy with production.

"Does that mean if the production is better it makes the music worse?"

I feel like raw production fits most black metal, so if it would be better that way then i suppose that would mean its "worse" with cleaner production (generally speaking). But its not necessarily going to ruin it for me, i can jam a well-produced (meaning clean, polished) black metal album as long as everything else is good.

I like "live' sounding production, especially in black metal.

"Does that mean if the production is better it makes the music worse?"

No, but "better" is subjective. There's no gold standard of production that would make everything sound better, it's gotta fit the style. Production is as much an artistic choice as anything else, and production that's too clean generally irritates me. Especially with a genre like black metal where the aesthetic is meant to be raw and gritty.

I like raw sounding stuff too, not saying it has to be overly polished, it's just that when it is an 'artistic decision' it feels less genuine and in that sense loses part of its magic. If that makes sense. For example, if you start off with a garage rock band from a literal garage or whatever and you can't afford equipment, since you know those were the circumstances for the band, it's fine and I don't mind it. But if you literally choose to have a muddy sound in metal when you can have one in which at least you can hear the instruments separately, I can't get down with that. It seems like hipster elitism, but I guess to each his own.

And I'm pretty sure "better" in terms of production and mix is quite quantifiable, of course it does come down to personal preference, but there is objectively better and worse production

Lol elitism has nothing to do with an artistic choice, its when you think youre better than others.

Marrow production is dope and the album wouldn't have been the same otherwise. By Ashes Agalloch had grown to the point where their sound was at risk of veering too far into quaint polished melodies for its own good (something this suffers from greatly) and Marrow was a brilliant mitigation for their never having been particularly interesting as a melodic guitar band

I... guess I can understand having totally clear and audible instrumentation as a benchmark for what you consider to be a good mix, but even that seems restrictive to me. Things can blur together and still accentuate a groove or melody, or add to an atmosphere, or serve any number of functions in the background of a mix.

In any case, Marrow sounds pretty good imo. It's somewhat muddy, but not exactly lo-fi. You couldn't record that in a garage with shitty gear

This can't seriously be this low rated? I haven't listened yet but how is this possibly that far off from the previous albums?

Probably just the backlash of this being a step down from their others, but not bad and of course better than anything by Periphery or bands like that.

I never actually listened to this album despite it being their last, so for me, the last thing I heard was the FAUSTIAN ECHOES EP from 2012 so that is their last for me.
