This and Marrow definitely didn't deserve the reception that they got here. They were largely very well received elsewhere, and this album is essentially the same sound as what they did on Marrow but with a different theme.

I do prefer Marrow though, and it's became my favorite Agalloch album over the years.

They're both easy 4.5's for me now, the others are all 5's.

This album sucks, it is the sound of a band breaking apart. Marrow was poor as well but at least had several redeeming moments worth listening for. This record has "The Astral Dialogue" and then a bunch of wankery. I cannot really understand giving this a 4.5.

And I can't understand anyone giving it a 2 but I respect your opinion. :]

I just don't understand where you get wankery from. Your usage of the term must have seriously different connotations that how it's usually applied to stuff like Dream Theater.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. When I think wank I think of shit like BTBAM.

I don't mean it in the sense of technicality for technicality's sake. What I mean by that is that many points of this just sound like the band is kind of doing whatever the fuck they want without regard for whether or not it works. Plateau of the Ages is a prime example.

What about the second part?! I mess my pants so much every single time the band kicks back in after the ambient part.

I do feel like this album is for the most part directionless, so I agree with Crysis on that. I feel like it does have some other redeeming moments besides just Astral Dialogue, though.

And as for Marrow, I actually enjoy it quite a bit. Watcher's Monolith has always been my favorite track off of it

I think the second half of Black Lake is one of the worst things this band has ever done, so I guess that's where we differ and probably why you like this so much.

Into the Painted Grey is so gud tho it's like Agalloch if Agalloch decided to actually play bm which is great bc it actually is Agalloch doing exactly that.

Yes, I think so too.

And yes, Into the Painted Grey is absolutely phenomenal.

Ghosts is also one of their most bm sounding songs and works well in the same way. Black Lake is easily top 5 Agalloch
