Album Rating: 3.7
A departure from Marrow of the Spirit, Serpent displays overall improved songwriting and production but fewer standout moments that made Marrow above average. While it has its moments, the relentless consistency gets tiresome when there is so little to grasp emotionally. The interludes are serviceable, and the drumming is integrated much better into the music than on Marrow. There are unfortunately no clean singing, and not much vocals overall. Vales Beyond Dimension is an album highlight 3.3/5

Ashes is best even if it gets a little underwhelming after Waves

yeah nothing they could have done would have topped fire above, ice below.
they peaked on ashes and should have either started a new project or just quit altogether unfortunately. as evidenced by the last two albums, there was really nowhere else for them to go with their sound.

Pale Folklore is best, but yeah this is nothing like Ashes. Or anything else they've put out really.

i agree that this isnt like anything theyve put out yet, but paradoxically this is also filled to the brim with rehashed ideas (like how the birth and death of the pillars of creation is a blatant rip off of the celebration for the death of man)
it sounds like a bad agalloch cover band honestly.

These last two have sounded like Agalloch awkwardly trying to be an atmospheric black metal band and failing. It's pretty appalling how awkward the songwriting is on Marrow, at least they improved it on here

Agreed that this is easily their worst album. It's honestly like a 3.2, but it's Agalloch so I give them the benefit of the doubt.
Hope they don't continue this though.

i pretty much agree except i really enjoyed marrow. it's funny that the band themselves don't realize this at all. they call ashes their least favorite album, saying it's their "pop" album. i wonder what they think about this album

They probably think it's their magnum opus in that case.

Agreed, as I said in the review "It is Agalloch sounding like the multitudes of acts that attempted to capture the magic of their very unique sound, only to make it obvious that they didn’t have the songwriting talent to do so."

I like it.

It sounds like recycled cuts from the time between Ashes and Marrow imo, but not nearly as good as either.
