Pale Folklore definitely rules. I'd have a hard time ranking their albums at this point but PF would be near the top

Well written indeed but anyone who doesn't admit that this album needs time - which you have done - is placed in the typical rushed Sputnik category. No offence Judio but you rushed it out just to try and score some limelight.

None taken, but for the record I disagree hard. Even though the album was just released for only a few days, I spent quite a while formulating my opinion on it, and listened to it so many goddamn times to make sure it had sunken in completely. I'm sorry but, at least for me, if an album hasn't grown on me by then, it really never will (it actually did grow on me, grew from like a 1.5 to a 2.5 but I don't see it growing anymore). Plus all the stuff I said about it still holds true even if for some reason I do like it more, like how the songs are terribly-paced and how the acoustic interludes are boring filler. I submitted my review early because I can tell when my opinion is and isn't going to change and I had the day off from school anyway so I figured I might as well. As for receiving a bit of limelight for my review, well, that was just a happy coincidence ;]

this is bullshit. i can name countless albums that took time, not repeated listens, to grow on me.

i still have some faith in this but i have no desire to return to it for a while.

Good review. I actually appreciate that record and what you wrote that there is something that makes you come back to this record is definetely true. The acoustic tracks really grew on me and tbh i really like them now. Not their most spectacular album but their most focused one. The people here on sputnik bashing this record although are bashing this cause they like to complain on a high level and concerning agalloch's amazing discography i kind of feel for their opinions but you must also consider that except all these flaws it's by no means bad.

I still don't care much for the second acoustic interlude, it's kinda bland.

It's far from "bullshit;" obviously our brains work very differently. Not everyone processes music the

exact same way, dude. I can only speak for myself, but the only type of music that really grows on me

are types of music I've never heard before or am just getting into, not stuff that bores the shit out

of me that feels like I've heard it 500 times before. Who knows, maybe for some unexplained reason

this will grow on me. If it does, I'll be sure to voice my new opinion on it and makes necessary

changes to my review as I see fit.

i'm sorry but expecting to hear something different if you just listen to the same album on loop back to back in a short space of time is just naive, regardless of 'how you process music'. it's often your interpretation and emotion that shape how you process music and that obviously changes over time

i listened to the new rosetta endlessly when it first came out and my opinion remained negative until i came back to it about 6 months later and really came to like it

i mean if it's really not how you work then fine but i do find it highly unusual

depends how you feel at the time too, ive listened to stuff and dismissed it then a week later in a different mood and maybe not so worn out of listening to new stuff i liked it a lot more

Ok, you make a good point Darknoctus. I concede that I probably could have given this album more time

to sink in before writing my review, but this just didn't strike me as something that would grow over

time, since usually repeated listens do the trick in determining that. However I might have been

hasty, I'll revisit my review after a couple months to see what's changed.

Just got through my second listen... have to say it hits me way, way better than their last record.

As someone pointed out earlier the acoustic bits seem a little bland for a band like Agalloch (but for me that's simply because I expect so much of 'em...). Nevertheless they are a welcome change to the pace of the album, I find the flow to be one of the best aspects of 'The Serpent' so far. "Celestial Effigy" is definitely the catchiest tune, which vaguely reminds me of "Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires" - positively I might add.

@Judio!

I think It's probably the "heaviness" of it... and how rustic it feels. It's almost a little too harsh and stripped-down. I go through maybe two songs off of it in my Agalloch rotation.
