Starting to enjoy this more than on the first 5 listens. Celestial Effigy is amazing. Like the lack of
BLASTBLASTBLASTBLASTBLASTBLAST found on Marrow. Also good review.

Reall dunno why some people think Pale Folklore is Agalloch's best effort. Imho it is their least good album. It feels a bit too amateurish compared to all their other work, also it has those insanly terrible female vocals on it, those few parts always gave me shivers in a bad way.
If I had to put all 5 albums in order it would be like this.
1. Ashes against the grain ("Not unlike the waves" is unmatched, best metal song of all time)
2. The Serpent and the Sphere
3. Marrow of the spirit / The Mantle (they are equal for me)
4. Pale Folklore

That's everything I love about it and I think a bunch of people will agree as well.

yeah like i said somewhere before, agalloch's adolescent pretentiousness is what gives them their charm.
you know when the he saw the nightfall and it called to him like a river of shadows he was completely serious and thats why it was cool.

Wizard,
I can fully understand, that people are fine with the "not so perfect" state Agalloch was in at that time. It has some charm.
But do you really like those female vocals on it ?
Also "Pale Folklore" has the worst production. If I compare this to the production of "The Serpent and the Sphere"...there are lightyears between them. The production and sound of "The Serpent and the Sphere feels almost perfect to me.

That's like the one song on Ashes I'm not keen on, never seems to go anywhere

Love them.
Also "Pale Folklore" has the worst production.
Once again, another thing I love about the album.

The PF bashing is silly tbh.

It's "amateurish".
|

PF is like the best album ever guys and you know it
|
| |
Yeah, it seems many don't get its greatness.
|
| |
pf is pretty much tied with ashes at 3rd for me. still both of them are beyond spectacular
|
| |
I think PF flows a bit better than Ashes, but that's my opinion.

Pale Folklore's production is perfect for what they were going for and perfect for Agalloch's sound, to me it would sound a bit weird with completely clean production.

are you serious, I love all Agalloch outputs, I just find some albums better than others. What this has to do with bashing...will always be your secret.

I actually wish they had female vocals more often, I love those female vocals. Especially before the
acoustic section in "As Embers Dress the Sky", I don't see what's so terrible about them.

I simply do not like high pitched opera like female vocals within the black metal genre
