I was hoping for a sput-hyperbole return to form love-fest extravaganza over this.

Looking forward to listening either way.

Ah pulling out the old "make fun of the dig" strategy, been there done that. I could say that you 5'd

this album after 12 hours of it streaming or the fact that you also 5'd Kindly Bent to Free Us but I

won't press that matter.

Kyle pls

I mean, there are some good tracks (Celestial Effigy, Astral Dialogue, all the acoustic interludes)

but the long tracks are all just balls of dead weight being dragged around for 8+ minutes. Tracks like

"Plateau of the Ages" - a long instrumental - is so devoid of memorable riffs it's almost astounding.

Granted, I've only listened to this twice but thus far I'm not impressed.

I am not making fun of anything here, actually I think Katatonia are pretty ok. But they are the poster child for repetition in the metal genre.

I just found it weird digging katatonia and blaming Agalloch of being boring.

Sure I can understand where you're coming from but you also had the same problem with Marrow, correct?

"or the fact that you also 5'd Kindly Bent to Free Us but I

well you just did press that matter

And yes, Kindly bent us is for me BY FAR the best Cynic album.

I think most people just have a huge problem when bands evolve and do a slightly different thing.

Cynic = no more metal anymore or Agalloch = no more repeating their first 3 CDs for another output of 24 CDs that sound exactly like their first 3 albums.

I am not mad at all, in the end only my own opinion matters to me, but it is fun to see people get mad at bands when they change their style. Evolving is not for everybody it seems.

hmm interesting how people call this boring but say the new Insomnium is awesome. I haven't listened to this yet, but it's not possible to be more boring than Shadows of the Dying Sun

or maybe it is, can't wait to find out

For much of it yes, but in a different way. With Marrow there were plenty of riffs and it actually had dynamic aspects to it, it's just that those riffs were largely devoid of emotion or didn't hang around or evolve long enough to develop it. This, on the other hand, seems to be boring due to a general lack of dynamics.

crysis i know u want to review this and form an opinion quickly but did u seriously listen to this twice today cuz i don't think that's how it works

You seem to be implying that I care about formulating an opinion quickly and want to rush out a review, which is not the case (hence the lack of rating unlike many other people praising/complaining about this record). I could care less about being one of the first to review this. And yes, I have listened to this twice because I had a spare two hours when I got home from work. How else do you expect it to work? As I said, all my comments are reflections based on those two listens.

Yeah that's about how I'd describe it if I had to compare it to their past works.
