Signal, my favorite Chevelle album is either Wonder What's Next or Vena Sera, depending on my mood

Too much filler on the second half of the album.

Nah the second half > first half imo

Curse, I like Vena Sera quite a bit, and WWN is great, but I find myself not going back to that one as much for some reason. I like the aggression in both of those albums, and I'm glad to hear that this one is a nod to their "heavier" tendencies.

It's probably tracks 8 and 9 that bring it down for me . Hopefully they'll grow on me as I listen more.

I think they will, IMO this is their best yet but definitely doesn't come across as their most immediate record

The Damned is awesome, how can that track bring it down

The guitar solo before the second verse on that one is pretty trippy

Also, there's a lot of layered guitars I'm noticing on repeated listens

It's funny you mention that you don't like track 8 and 9 cause those are my two favorites on the album

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. While Hats Off to the Bull is pretty melodic, I thought it was definitely heavier than Sci-fi Crimes and more straight-ahead than Vena Sera. It's definitely not as heavy as Wonder What's Next, but that's really where I got my belief of Hats Off... as a heavier album.

I still think "Twinge" and "One Ocean" are the best on the album, but "Choking Game" is really up there too.

It grooves. Love the almost live-sounding feel of the guitars at the end of that track

Yeah, Vena Sera jumps straight into their heavy side but dang if it isn't awesome.

I'm guessing 3.9 or 4, it'll definitely be higher than most of the discog

I didn't know how to feel on first listen, because I was completely confused by how little emphasis there was on vocals in most songs, and how most of the songs don't even seem to have an actual chorus. After a few more listens this is definitely a different beast.

@withateethuh

Yeah, with less vocals and lack of choruses, that's the experimental side finally showing. I'm not sure how successful this album will be on radio. Though "Take Out the Gunman" is doing really well on the rotation charts right now, the rest of the album is so, so much different.
