I didn't say it was a life style choice, I meant they sung about what they went through with sincerity (and I wasn't going as far back as the delta blues). Bands that were part of the hair metal scene sung about what was going on around them, just because that was fun, drugs, women etc. doesn't make it any less sincere than say rock and roll bands singing about rebellion (perhaps a better example/comparison).

It makes things unbelievably base though and that's never a good thing.
Anyway sod it whose the greatest of the lot, the album that encapsulates the sound, era and was responsible for the disappearance of the ozone layer due to hairspray. I'm up for a challenge, rec us summink bro.

I'd recommend Dokken. They're definitely one of my favourites and I know that some people like Dokken despite having similar opinions about hair metal as yourself so there's definitely a chance you might like them (I'm not holding my breath though).
Try the album Tooth and Nail.

Will do dude.

Great rec Jamie, there's some serious guitar on Tooth and Nail. I haven't listened to it in ages so I'm jamming in right now.
If you don't mind zak, you may also want to check:
Tesla - Mechanical Resonance
Ratt - Out of the Cellar

Cheers manosg.
Ah yes, Tesla's a good rec too.

Wasn't Ratt the band that Barf was blaring out the stereo on the Winnebago in Spaceballs?
Cool!

Didn't remember so I looked it up on youtube. I think it's Bon Jovi.

Holy MOLEY!!!!!

That's a great point too JT. Bands like Motley Crue and GNR were downright considered deviant antisocials. The wasn't just an image. It was part of who they were. Sure, cookie-cutter bands came along imitating the image without any substance to back it up, but blaming the good hair metal bands for that is like hating Pearl Jam because of Creed.

never really considered motley or gnr hair metal. gnr in particular came off as much more sincere than other la bands at the time.

Few bands have sucked more than Creed.

To be honest, I never hated Creed either. When I was first picking up the guitar I found Tremonti to be a fairly interesting guitarist.
And that's the thing about bands like Skid Row, Tesla, Dokken, Enuff Z'nuff and yes, even Winger. They may have made some regrettable image choices, but if you dig a little deep with them you'll find that they have some terrific and sincere music. It just so happens that they were also a product of their time.

I was a huge Creed fan for like 2 months in the summer of 2000. I was like obsessed with them for a brief period of time. Band is way better than people say, although they had no business selling that many albums.

Haha! Aren't you glad you grew out of it? Sully Erna has to be one of the most boring singers on the planet.
