"Been thinking of getting into these guys, is this a good place to start?"
worst place to start actually! although it is their first, it doesn't sound anything like the band will in a mere 3 years time span
i'd suggest getting American Beauty or Workingman's Dead
as previously suggested, Live/Dead is also top notch

I'll read over the review later and give you some feedback.

I like the style of the stuff they released in that 3 year time span more than what came after so for someone like me it's a pretty good place to start so it may well be for some other people too :D
I see what you're saying though.

oh yeah definitely. didn't mean that the first 3 years weren't quality music, but if you are trying to get into the Grateful Dead, their early sound isn't exactly the best representation of their music overall
ja feel me?

thanks~!
how do you do the indentations when you quote other users?
|
| |
Yeah I know what you mean.
To do quotes you do this:
[quote]insert quote here[quote]
but add a / in the second lot of brackets in front of the word 'quote' (no spaces).

jerry garcia
wow nice thanks! you read my review yet? jerry wants criticism
|
| |
Very good review. I can't really give you any criticism as such a it's consistently solid throughout. I would say that you might want to mention at least one more track or part of the album and describe the album's sound a bit more (without relating it to their future material) but that's just nit-picking really.

alrighty then, thanks! i would have described more of the songs but to be honest they all follow the
same blues standard formula. viola lee (and maybe Morning Dew, which has a folk sound) are the only
ones to differ. i appreciate the read brother!
my Anthem of the Sun review should be out tomorrow night

any feedback on my review gnarly?
|
| |
ah i see, i got excited when i read the summary hehe.
review was really good i thought, esp if it was your first time. in a normal review i would have
wanted you to focus more on the album rather than talking a lot about what they went on to become, but
given that you plan on this being the first entry of a discography review, that makes sense and puts
things in perspective. would have been nice to see you talk a liiiittle more about songs on this album
and how they flow together and stuff but overall I thought it was good, gave me a reasonable idea of
what this sounds like and especially people who are into the grateful dead but haven't heard this
would have a good idea of what this is like.

thanks man, all great points i'll keep in mind for the one i'm working on now. main reason i didn't describe more of the songs was that they are all very similarly structured for the most part, with the same blues standard and trippy organs. it was a pretty distinct style of 1967 (Quicksilver, 13th Floor Elevators, etc) so i didn't want to dwell too much on analyzing each track's sound; cause it would have been very repetitive. their next album is all over the place stylistically, so i will be sure to expand on the song descriptions in that review.

Amazing album, I was raised on the dead and love all of their material but I definitely agree with JT in that the first three albums are the best (live dead too)
Of course, the dead were always a live band and the studio albums only show you a certain aspect of the dead as a whole

60's Dead is where it's at, agreed.
