Damn Artuma get on When Forever, it's as heavy and sick as this one (plus it's uber consistent), Lowest Common Denominator is also the eeriest Converge can get
|

Album Rating: 4.5
But the problem does not lie within the lyrical content. The lyrical content is brilliant throughout the fourty-five minute run time of the album. Nor does it lie with the instrumental that accompanies it; rather, it's the hectic and at times incoherent way the songs are transmitted to the listener
the "incoherent" way in which the songs are delivered is designed to feel like the the emotional whirlwind that occupies the headspace of someone after a breakup. If the album was straight ahead and linear it wouldn't work half as well.

Okay, here's some constructive criticism for your absolutely horrendous review.
"It's been said by many that 'Jane Doe' is a crowning achievement in the music industry, displaying passion and emotion in its lyrics."
Change 'it's' to it has. 'Crowning achievement in the music industry' is a bad way to word what I know you're trying to say. And your next sentence would imply that it's only considered such an achievement because of "passion and emotion in its lyrics," which is not the case. Many albums can boast this claim, but they aren't all 'crowning achievements of the music industry.' A crowning achievement implies something more. Beyond its lyrics, why is it so highly regarded? Or what is it about the lyrics, besides the passion and emotion, which has made the record so highly revered?
"The idea that Jane Doe, an unnamed man (or woman in this case)"
Jane Doe refers to an anonymous woman, not an anonymous man. Though I suppose there could be a man somewhere on the planet with the name Jane Doe, so I'll concede you that. But it's still a stupid sentence.
"...is one that many would be quick to associate themselves with, and be even quicker to defend the content within this record."
"quicker to defend the content within this record..." what? I assume you are suggesting that since many people can identify with a relationship ending that those same people thus defend this record. This is a flawed argument, and you've worded it badly (just like the rest of the review).

"But the problem does not lie within the lyrical content. The lyrical content is brilliant throughout the fourty-five minute run time of the album. Nor does it lie with the instrumental that accompanies it; rather, it's the hectic and at times incoherent way the songs are transmitted to the listener that may see many be ready to cut the music and listen to something more tolerable."
So the music and lyrics are good. The "hectic and at times incoherent way the songs are transmitted to the listener?" What, did your iPod run out of battery while you were listening to the album? Is your CD scratched? You can't be talking about the music, since you just said that isn't a problem. You also said the lyrics were "brilliant." Is it the combination of the two together which is the problem? Are the two together just so good that it becomes bad?
"The album is amazing, there is no question about that."
Then why did you give it a 2.5 (average?)
"But it's the way the album tries to bring across its emotion."
This album, just like any other, uses music and lyrics to bring across its emotion. You've said both were not problems, even calling the latter "brilliant."
"this is where the problem lies; it tries too hard to evoke emotion out of a specific listener when it should be catering to a larger audience."
Which listener? Jacob Bannon's dog? Because music doesn't cater to a large audience that makes it bad?
"The album relies too much on its lyrical content to convince the listener to associate with it, rather than having the listener actually understand it."
What? Are you saying that since the lyrics cannot be deciphered without a lyric sheet that it renders their excellence pointless? That is an interesting argument, and one I can understand (though disagree with), if it is indeed what you were trying to say.

"Even as I listen to 'Jane Doe' as I write this review, and having listened to it many times over, I struggle to make coherent sense out of the high-pitched scream that is emitted from Bannon's lungs without having to search the internet for not only the lyrics, but the meaning behind them."
Okay, that is your argument. So your problem is with the vocals themselves, and how they've squandered the excellent lyrics by being indecipherable.
The bottom line is that, although your argument has merit, you've worded it so awfully that it is A) incredibly difficult to decipher and B) makes for a terrible read. It's ironic, because the problem with your review is much the same problem you have with the album: the ideas behind it (or in the case of the album, the lyrics) are good, however you've expressed it so awfully in writing (for the album, the vocals) that it is rendered pointless. Better luck next time.

"Take away the scream, and the album is well-crafted."
its just a matter of how much you are able to EMBRACE the vocals as a conception of art. just like any other shit
