I listen to this in the middle of winter every year and it gives me a kind of euphoria that I desperately need.

t/t is an absolute stormer, but this whole thing has some of the most borderline patronising spoken word samples of any record I can think of. Absolute flop on the show-don't-tell front I think Burial usually excels at - I like the final sample on Come Down to Us for the framing it gives the whole thing, but the rest just feel stifling. Real shame

Oof. Defs one of his best. Took me a minute to warm up to it though. Always felt a bit extra sonically and lyrically before that

He took a similar approach on the shock power of love EP. I get why more upfront lyrical stuff seems unfitting for burial because it’s usually obscured or less intelligible, but i personally think it works really well for his music. The more comfortable he’s gotten with what he has to say, the clearer the samples have become. Pretty beautiful

Also yeah coming back to this i always forget how heavy this album is on the r&b influence, that’s always been a big part of burial’s ethos because duh 2-step but this is by farrr the most full tilt r&b tip he’s ever done. I remember thinking come down to us was just so sluggish and indulgent, I think it was tough for a lot of burial fans to vibe with initially including me for literally years but it’s aged as one of his finest imo. Come back to it later Johnny dear

i wish it grew on me
its slightly more satisfying in the context of "tunes" but the non-t/t tracks are still just decent for me
t/t is still incredible though ofc

the actual R&B-styled samples on this are mostly good
the majority of the spoken word samples are absolutely not. feels so crass and corny compared to what I dig from Burial - sheds too much of the murk the last two EPs thrived on and sours the whole experience for me. clearly well-intended (and I get that making a departure from his more shadowy style was probably inspiring at the time), but it just feels artless and hamfisted to me :/
