it's interesting to see RA and a bunch of other sites instantly acknowledging this as another diamond and a beginning of a new burial era. I wouldn't like my Burial flirting with a hiss-drenched R&B sentimentalism, but still this is an enjoyable listen at times.

aside from this, I really like the review and the way you straightforwardly state your opinion, with which I generally agree.

haven't heard this yet, gonna wait till I'm done exams, so that I don't explode in madness :]

Good luck pal! :]

As always when an artist decides to change up his sound, I'm not against the notion of change at all. If anything, I mostly applaud such instances. It's just the execution I take fault with here.

The first paragraph could be a little more fluent, but otherwise this is a good review.

I mostly agree too. I need to listen to this more, but I'm not as of now this isn't particularly impressing me. But it's Burial so the 4.1's hardly surprising.

good review dude, although I was hoping you'd dig a little deeper with it. While the EP isn't my favorite of his, I feel it's an interesting enough release (whether you like it or hate it) to really take time to let it marinate and reflect on it both musically and thematically

good review, i especially agree with this part

he's bluntly patching his dozen different ideas together, instead of developing them individually into full songs.

i like the fact that hes trying for something new, but it doesnt even really sound like something new. its just, like you said, a bunch of different samples that dont really work that well together over some dub beats (except that annoying ass techno beat in the title track) and some crackle plugin and it just seems lazy and boring.

i mean i wasnt that big of a fan of him before this ill admit, but at least he had a recognizable style. this just sounds like him dilluting that style because he ran out of ideas.

Fair point. I'm trying to be as concise as possible these days while still touching on everything I want to say about a release. Should I have added more, there'd be a large chance I'd either repeat myself endlessly or sound like a pretentious asshole. Also, while I agree to a certain extent that this is his thematically most interesting release to date, the actual music takes priority with me, and it happens that I didn't have that much good things to say about it.

(except that annoying ass techno beat in the title track)

Haha, that might be my favorite bit on the whole EP.

Thanks fellas!

I did. I mean, sorta. Does listening to a YT stream with crappy laptop speakers count?

I must be tired. I thought "breakbeat rave" said "breakfast rave". That should be a genre.

Those are tricks he's used a bit too many times in the past and as a result, the three tracks here are lacking in profound emotional impact.

M'okay. And what if it's my first exposure to Burial's music ?

the sappy monologues in between of the actual music almost completely sabotage the mood Burial is creating with these highlights

Do you dislike the monologue at the end of Rival Dealer ? I can understand for the transgender speech, but it's the end of the record anyway.

The follow-up, Truant / Rough Sleeper, seemed like a bit of a hiccup along the way in comparison

Sorry to emphasize this bit again, but i'd like to hear more hiccups like this EP. Less immersive, less structured I agree, but Rough Sleeper is pure sonic bliss.

in his defense, the EP does kind of sound like shit regardless of how you listen to it
