It seems such a, for lack of a better word, sidestep from what they were doing.

Feom WDADU to Metropolis Pt. 2 they were honing in on their songwriting skill in particular, learning to better combine prog madness and great songwriting for every time, challenging every boundary. Then here it seems like they, I guess got complacent.

for the most partI agree with you Gamam

this album never really stuck much of a chord with me like their others, even when they were my favourite band back in the day

though going back now it holds up better than most all the albums that came after

It sure will. Blind Faith is fucking amazing, such a well crafted and written song, as is Misunderstood. I've been really enjoying this one again lately.

Blind Faith is top tier DT; One of my favorite extended prog metal jams.

All those time signature changes in The Test That Stumped Them All is so much fun to play on the drums too.

The chorus of Blind Faith is pure King's X, and I love it

Omg now that you mention it, it does sound like it.

I remember reading that when they were in the early stages of this album, Portnoy (I think) brought in a bunch of classic albums to listen to for inspiration, like Rust In Peace, The Downward Spiral and Ok Computer. I wonder if a King's X album made it in there now...

I like this a lot, but to me it's just a tier below their masterpieces

My favourite Dream Theater album, shame it's become overshadowed by it's predecessor, as I genuinely find this much more consistent and enjoyable overall.
