This album is the sound of a band jumping the shark.

I don't agree.

Passive and the John Lennon cover are great, but the rest? Not so much.

I love the Gaye cover. Also the tone throughout is pleasing to me.

This is an extremely boring and pretentious album. Even by MJK's standards.
The only reason I have it as a 2.0 is because Passive rules and What's Goin' On is actually a good interpretation.

I understand many people just don't like this one, but when you genuinely like something you know. Whenever I hear this, I don't find myself annoyed or put off by it.

But it's so...repetitive. The songs don't go anywhere. They just sort of half-heartedly build. There are no sonic surprises anywhere, and no catharsis (except Passive) unlike the previous albums. Even Passive is pretty much the simplest and most straightforward 'good' APC song there is.
To me it sounded/sounds like this is the point where Billy Howerdel completely ran out of ideas and that the previous two albums were flukes. Fortunately he redeemed himself somewhat with the album Ashes dIvide's.

By and Down...

"Counting" has no catharsis, no build, doesn't go anywhere?
And Green is right, "By and Down" is a sign that Billy is still out of ideas.

Counting would be ok if it was possible to not compare it to Pet...

*smh* I guess I am lucky that I heard "Counting" first because it sounds infinitely better to me.
Actually, I think my interest in more bizarre, menacing sounding stuff may be why I like this more than most. I really like the direction they took here even if a couple of the covers are duds.

The whole "pretentious" argument is f'n weak. A lot of good shit can be considered pretentious, doesnt mean it sucks. Besides, why the fuck does it even matter?
That said, the album is a bit boring, but I still enjoy it every now and then.

When I said pretentious what I meant was that with this album makes it seem like MJK and co. believe that they don't have to actually try to make good songs, but that anything they record and commit to plastic or vinyl or whatever is automatically gold-plated brilliance. That's always been the vibe I got from this album.

Isn't that the story of Keenan's life, though?

Yeah, but at least prior to this most of the time he/they actually bothered to back up the bluster with good music.

This release was definitely odd, but I felt the theme was very appropriate in it's timing.

Yeah, this was near the start of the musician backlash against Bush.

Counting is the worst piece of shit on this album.
Those four songs I mentioned are the only ones I come back to
