I hate how most people on mx have no clue what true emo is.

The review: Sorry, but I didn't think it was good at all. The grammar was atrocious and it didn't offer much in the way actual information about the cd. All I really know from reading the review is that there's some yelling and some singing with an occasional solo.

The album: Eh, s'alright. Really forgettable, but I can listen through most of it without getting an overwhelming urge to rip out my eardrums with a spork, which is more than I can say for their first two albums. I really didn't like any of Suicide Notes... and The Curse was really, really bad for the most part. There were about three songs I actually liked on it though, whereas this new album has nothing that stands out, it just all blends together into one huge mass of mediocrity.

I thought the review was pretty good, it gave info on the songs of the album which is the purpose of a track by track.

I listened to a few songs off this album. Though it was a step forward musically, it was still bad. Not as bad as stuff off The Curse, but that's not saying much. Alex can't growl. That's a sad fact. And don't anyone give me any bad justification saying "oh, he puts power in his screams" or "but it's so emotional." All he does is scream at the top of his lungs and rattle the back of his throat. That is the worst thing you can do to your throat when trying to pull off a scream. The lyrics aren't that great either. Guy really needs to learn how to write. And the production was just abominable.

This review I didn't really think was all that good. More proofreading. And I know I can be a fanboy myself, but tone it down man.

While I'm thinking of it, there is nothing emo about Atreyu, MCR, The Used, etc. Nothing. MCR themselves apparently have no idea why their fans keep saying they're emo.

And since someone tried to bring it up, Cradle of Filth are not black metal, traditional metal is not about evil, and Atreyu are poseurs because they write songs about how girls aren't having sex with them to appeal to teen angst and then slip in supernatural overtones to appeal to kids who think wearing mascara makes them Goth when the truth is they know nothing about Goth counterculture. Basically, just another shallow attempt to cash in on angst with bad poetry, sub-par musicianship, and over-hyped imagery. This Message Edited On 04.02.06

Here's what sets them apart:

Real emo = good, heavy at times (City of Caterpillar)

Fake emo = absolute stinkin' garbage, I'd rather listen to someone being burned alive.

Question:

Is this Atreyu release just as corny and over-produced as their others?

The clean vocals got better, the screaming still sucks.. The production is weird, you can't hear the guitars too well...

They also are strangely low in the mix. If there's good riffs in there, you really need to make a commitment to hear them, because there are some times when the production borders on noise rock like late-career Swans. Not to mention that bizarre flange-like droning I hear in the background.

And yeah, Brandon got less whiny, though he still sounds like he's trying to impersonate Geddy Lee, Sting, David McWane, and John Bush all at once, but doesn't possess the range or ability of any of the above.

Alex still is squawking like a pterydactyl.

Steerpike, will you have my children?

I'm a big fan of Atreyu. But i found this album to be very disapointing. It's got a few gems but without a doubt their worst yet. I'll just put on The Curse to remind me why i love this band so much...

ps. Gotta love the emo label that people can't get over. How about forget about the label biasing and we judge the music? This Message Edited On 04.02.06

Your inability to understand the point of genres is not mine nor anyone else's fault. "Oh, we should just judge the music-" Shut up. Labels are nothing more than a system of organization. We're not trying to pigeonhole you or your music, we're not trying to oppress creativity, or whatever. It's just a cataloging system. Get over it.

And anyone who slags off entire genres because of a bad stereotype is just stupid, and there's no point in trying to educate the stupid.

That said, I repeat that Atreyu are not emo. Please stop calling them that, because they have nothing in common with Rites of Spring or Moss Icon or Indian Summer. This Message Edited On 04.02.06

We love you Steerpike. Also, what's so wrong about Atreyu is how they try to sound metalcore by taking everything good away from it and leaving it to nothing but pop music. Also why should we listen to a band where every member takes a few hours to become "scene" enough to play and they just take a few minutes to write a song. (Or so it seems like it.)

To the kid that compared Atreyu and A7X and said that A7X is better... well, that's barely and A7X still isn't good and still isn't metalcore.

EDIT - I believe that Loner said this before I did... but just like The Curse... this CD is WAY overproduced. The guitars sound like they're dead and don't have life. The screams got worse (in my opinion) but the clean vocals got better. Pop album? This Message Edited On 04.03.06

yeah, the lead singer of Atreyu could probably pull doing voice overs for the dinosaurs on Jurrassic Park. At least he has a career when people pull their heads out of their asses
