It's indeed just another DT album - good moments, meh moments.

Am I the only one here who hears a lot of Symphony X style on the album?

The band logo on the cover looks like a car logo

Album is alright I guess, but goddammit. The instrumental track at the beginning and the first 40 seconds of 'Surrender to Reason' sound great.
Makes me wish that these guys were better songwriters.

Some of this just blatantly rips off Rush. It's like they gave up on trying to be vague about it too.

People on Prog Archives seem to think it's their best since Six Degrees. And judging by the ratings people on RYM seem to think it's better than anything since Train of Thought.
I guess it's just here that it's getting a lot hate. Although imo some of that hate is warranted.

Some good moments as expected, but there's nothing really impressive.
The band stalled since Metropolis Pt. 2.

Ugh. Samey. So samey. I suppose there's some chance the album could be a grower, but I'm not holding my breath.
It seems to draw from all of the previous albums without actually taking anything interesting from those albums.
Re: the two tracks that everyone seems to like--
Surrender to Reason maybe sounds like it could fit on Awake. I'm even tempted to describe Illumination Theory as a lesser knockoff of Octavarium+Count of Tuscany.

Nothing here is horrible tbh (well except the second half of along for the ride which is hideous)
but this album is just so bland, boring and mediocre. I've defended DT a lot for some recent
releases including the last album which I thought was really good for the most part but with this
album DT are completely stagnant. Nothing on here except for Illumination Theory sounds fresh or
exciting. It's such a regressive and safe album. ADTOE was kinda safe too....but I forgave them for
that because of Portnoy going who was a huge part of the band so I understood it would take time to
make an adjustment (Portnoy wasn't just a mere drummer after all, a key songwriter) but there is no
excuses this time around.
DT played it way too safe here, this sounds just so uninspired overall. If it wasn't for
Illumination Theory this wouldn't have even been a 2.5 for me. Disappointing but in a way not
surprising.

Portnoy used to mix and match bits and pieces the other guys composed, but the band has been stagnant since TOT, and I thought Portnoy was a key part of that stagnation, guess all the members are. If Portnoy came back they would still release this same kind of music, if they went on hiatus, when they returned they would still release mediocre music most probably. I don't think they have any fresh ideas in their heads anymore
