Awesome review, I have actually seen these live at a festival not two weeks ago and they were electric. However, they are a very good covers band at the moment, nothing more.

A slightly more balanced account? http://thebluemoment.com/2013/09/10/the-meaning-of-the-strypes/

@greenlinkinmuse, that would be 3rd form or Year 10 in the UK
@CinnamonBoy, who needs balance if you can pull off a hilarious rant. Although that is an enjoyable read that you linked.

That link Cinnamon has put up is a good read but you could argue that Dr Feelgood actually brought something to the table with Wilko Johnson and paved the way for punk.

Nice review, Ali. Seen a few simpering write ups of their live show, crediting them on the basis of being young. Cool, let's say sweatshops and child labour are great then.

Cinnamon - Interesting piece you linked certainly, but the Strypes don't purport to offer anything new. At least the British groups (Stones, Feelgood etc) put a new cultural spin on an older formula. This is just karaoke and I find it really weird.
It's like someone's dad (an aggrieved, failed rock star or...eureka...a record company exec) is pulling the strings here. Bet these kids don't even know how to use a fucking washing machine.

@ConorIsNotHere I'm not doubting the hilarity of the rant or the skill of the writing.. just the accuracy of the content.
Firstly, yes these kids are young but there's not an awful lot they can do about that. If anything the numbers on their birthcerts have held them back rather than made them 'exempt from any form of criticism' as is claimed here. Every piece that has been written about them has mentioned their age, a millstone that unfortunately only time can heal.
Secondly, the claim that they lack ambition and creativity because they don't pay homage to other genres is ludicrous. What are they to do? Release a debut album of prog, hip-hop, metal and soul to prove that they're not culturally deprived?
Thirdly, the lyrics... Since when do the lyrics matter in R&B music? In fact, history shows that the more inane the words, the better! Check out Please Please Me or how about "Walking the dog, I'm just a walking the dog ,If you don't know how to do it, I'll show you how to walk the dog" Would this have been considered 'riveting stuff' if the reviewer had given his opinion on the Stones first album? ...Now, that's a piece I'd like to read by the way..

Funny read, i'm looking forward to hearing this now. Which from the sounds of it is quite masochistic

@JViney I know this is exactly what the reviewer warned against (!) but I would really urge you to see this band live before you write them off as 'karaoke'. I like the record but it could never to justice to what they are doing onstage. Phenomenal.

Haha, and here I thought this was going to be good.

Good luck young lads, I'll just stick to my Brian Jonestown records.

"It's like if you gave the Beatles cocaine."
oh
|
| |
The Beatles were considered unoriginal generic mainstream knock offs when they first came out too....just saying.
|
| |
well, the beatles werent the most original band in their first years - their first albums all contained something like 7 covers.
who considered them that though? are there any reviews from the time? id be interested to have a look at them
|
| |
It's hard to say honestly. Because judging by Rolling Stone's history if there ever were any negative reviews on the Beatles I'm sure they've all been retconned into glowing acclaim and praise.

This is hilarious
|
| |
it really is... that generic
|

Not gonna lie though...that cover is atrocious.
