This feels like a 4 so far, i don't care if it is good but a cover is a cheap way to fill a tracklist, covers should be just bonus tracks or something

in metal anyway, maybe less so in some other genres but yea

Pretty much all of Death's standard albums only have 8 to 10 songs anyway, so adding Painkiller onto this or not, it still would have been in their normal ballpark for an album tracklist, so it didn't bother me

Can't believe how good this record is, and I haven't listened to it in a while in favor of more brutal stuff. Might have to lighten the load a little

Yeah, this one is really solid. It's not my fave Death like it used to be, but songs like Scavenger of Human Sorrow, Spirit Crusher, and Flesh and the Power It Holds are still classics

this is basically the album in which Chuck's ability to write riffs outgrew his ability to write songs

Album Rating: 4.2
People always say that, but tbh I tend to disagree. Most songs still follow the same verse-chorus-bridge-solo-verse-chorus format that Death always had, but just in a more sprawling and lengthy way. I'd say this album is still very well-structured despite the fact that it meanders here and there

definitely the most prog album of the discography

Album Rating: 4.2
Yeah, the band's last three in general really drive the prog elements a lot further (arguably Human too, but that one is still pretty firmly entrenched in the more raw classic DM stuff)

>this is basically the album in which Chuck's ability to write riffs outgrew his ability to write songs
would make sense if it had more than a few interesting riffs

I've definitely noticed over time that this is easily one of the most polarizing "acclaimed" albums out there. It's crazy how it's commonly accepted as a classic and yet people have such wildly differing opinions in it
