I have a very fond memory of listening to On Fire on an autumn train ride home from college.

I mean there are way more interesting choices for that vibe / scenario, but each to their own and all that

I just had faith in tect’s ability not to 5 something so distinctly average at the very least. Not expecting everything he lauds to be a roaring success, but I thought he could navigate the waters of blandness
Then again, he does have an American Football 5 so maybe I was sold a lie
To your second point, AF LP1 is a nostalgia darling for me, can't imagine what college would've been like without it, carried me through several breakups, pulled me out of a never-ending ennui etc etc. so there's a soft spot for that album maybe more so than any other, to rate it anything lower than a perfect score would be disingenuous to how I rate music (i.e., based almost solely on personal affection with some historical relativism for good measure) because I still to this day don't perceive a single flaw with that record
ANYWAY
I'm not terribly shocked by your distain for this album, but it shares a common thread with (to name something slightly more recent) Cigarette After Sex's debut - it does one thing. Just one. But it does that one thing extremely well. Problem is, if you don't personally care for that one thing, then you will hate the record, because it is nothing more than that one thing ad infinitum. TODAY kinda perfected the slacker-dream-pop-slowcore cocktail, at least to my ears.

I checked the debut of Cigarettes After Sex recently, but to me it just sounds as a The XX ripoff. Galaxie 500’s Today on the other hand, well, it rather serves as a starting point for other bands aiming for a similar atmosphere, so there’s a difference. I agree that it is quite one-dimensional, but it’s no problem if it pulls the right strings in you.
