Probably their second best album after their 2001 magnum opus, Toxicity.

You still need some improvement but you're getting there.

idk why eulogy has to be about one particular person. I always took it as calling out a a particular attitude

well yes that perspective is great/appropriate too, arguably/probably the ideal way to look at/approach it... and hell, you can even have both

I was under the impression that the Bill Hicks theory/interpretation was somewhat prevalent...

not sure where I fall in regards to my feelings on the validity I guess the truth is I have no idea, but it doesn't seem that unreasonable or that much of a stretch to me and I can definitely see why someone would draw that conclusion considering the track is titled "Eulogy" and Hicks had died in '94 between this record and their previous one... that alone wouldn't really be enough to make the connection but add in that Hicks is sampled on another track on the album "Third Eye" and direct tribute is paid to him with artwork included in the album's internal packaging and I dunno it starts to seem plausible that it could relate to him

then again, it also seems plausible that it could have absolutely nothing to do with him

Actually my perspective is that the entire album is a tribute to Bill Hicks.

He's pictured in the album liner and it says something like "another dead hero" or something like that

Idk if the whole album is but there are obviously specific nods to him i.e. samples on third eye etc

I mean @ sharenge, the lyrics on eulogy are hardly lyrics directed at someone you would imagine that they admired, i.e. Hicks

It's a very loose theory but kinda falls apart when you consider the lyrics

Why would Maynard think Hicks "had nothing to say" and why would he be considered a martyr. Doesn't make sense. The song is about Hitler's dog

I'll tell you what this album is about: Maynard smoking weed and thinking he knows what he's talking about, like any pothead. Consult the album Lateralus for more pointless lyrics about nothing, dressed nicely. Similarly, most life views shared by Maynard here are nonsense, except the personal ones about him being molested as a child - H. and Jimmy.
I wish Maynard was more real and personal. His 10,000 Days songs about his mother are SO TRVE™ compared to vacuous shit like Forty Six & 2 and Eulogy.

I too wrote the theory off for that same reason... the lyrics are clearly critical, not positive, and the band were obviously fans of his... just as you've pointed out... I'm well aware of everything you say

I'm not so quick to write it off for that reason anymore though... I mean I'm a huge fan of Hicks as well (pretty sure it would have been this record that exposed/introduced me to him as a teenager)... hell I might even go so far as to say I fucking love Bill Hicks, but having consumed all the Hicks and many times over, it's hard for me to argue that "angry and unhappy" isn't a fair assessment to take away of the guy... check RYM pages for some of his albums and I'm sure it won't be hard to find critical/negative reviews where people just describe him as some guy up on a stage ranting and raving... bitter, cynical, negative etc etc

obviously not conclusive evidence, and I guess the band are pretty opposed to the idea of their music having concrete interpretations imposed and want listeners to derive meaning for themselves, but yeah looking at it under a different light I don't find the idea so farfetched now

Not every song here has anything to do with Bill Hicks... far from it. There are tributes here and there, but the majority of songs aren't about him in any meaningful way. My understanding was that he was a friend and comedy hero to Maynard, and his then-recent death pervaded the overall direction of the recording.

"I can definitely see why someone would draw that conclusion considering the track is titled "Eulogy" and Hicks had died in '94'

'Eulogy' very clearly, is NOT about Hicks. A total misreading if that's what you genuinely think.

Very good point.

I also heard it was about Ron Hubbard. Oh Maynard why must you be so vague?

I say we conclude it's about and never discuss this again.
