John Mayer frustrates me but it could be because I don't know what albums to listen to...

Most songs I've heard (I guess the radio hits) I can't stand and annoy me but then I see videos of him absolutely ripping up Guitar and my mind is blown.

Does he have any jam albums or ones with solos everywhere?

john mayer trio - try!

that's a nice bluesy/jammy live album

ditto for 'where the light is'

best studio record is easily 'continuum' but the guitar is all very tasteful and smooth

has a great cover of hendrix's bold as love that he tears shit up on though

I actually think Mayer is way better than Frusciante.

While Frusciante wrote 20 great songs together with his bandmates from RHCP, Mayer wrote more than

60 by himself. He is also younger, a definite genius of our generation in my opinion.

I listened to almost 6 solo albums from Frusciante and none of them are really that special. He is

extremely overrated. Old RHCP is the real shit. I honestly think Mayer not only plays guitar better

but also compose better songs.

^ agreed. What makes John Mayer so great is that he is able to be both a talented blues guitarist and pop star. And have fans for both reasons. I think it's such a cool vibe at a concert when a ton of fan girls are right next to a group of 20-something guys who are blown away by his talent.

and to WhiteNoise, I could not stand JM's albums until I watched Where The Light Is. The assurance of his talent is what made me start to love his craft of containing his talent for the good of a song - not every song needs a face-shredding guitar solo

Too bad there's only one good song here. Easily my disappointment of the year.

"not every song needs a face-shredding guitar solo"

As a guitarist I couldn't agree more, People look at me strange when I say I'm a guitarist and can't get into Satriani, Vai, Dream Theatre etc, its so much more rewarding to hear a lick or riff that just fits and aids the song instead or masturbating with scales for a few bars.
