Incredibly full of himself. A former acquaintance of mine, Max, filled in on kit for “3” when they opened for PT in the early aughts, presumably touring this album or LS. Said the other guys in the band were very kind, talkative. Not ol Steve. Didn’t give a single one of them the time of day; just came in, played, left. He blindsided me with that story one football Sunday and got a genuine “:O” out of me. Lol. Super neat, if a bit sad/disappointing.

Not to say he owes anyone anything, but for someone who has made such lovely, warm music, he’s always seemed very self-important and, dare I say, Shallow.

"no socks with shoes is always a tell-tale sign"

I really don't know if that is "true. The only time I saw them in stage, he was barefooted, without socks. Some guy before the show of Porcupine Tree, vacuumed the stage before the show. At the time it seemed to me a very strange thing before I saw him barefooted.

Now I can't help but think that he mandates venues to vacuum the stage before his shows and that is so hilarious

Not to be a total fanboy, but the dude just likes to have fun on stage. I appreciate that he puts a lot of care into the quality of his live shows

Steven Wilson’s always performed barefoot, I think it’s just a personality quirk that some people have, tho he’s clearly on the pretty far end of it in terms of lifestyle. And the hand gestures onstage is weird, but in an interview he claimed he doesn’t even notice it in the moment, and kind of agreed it was a bit odd when he saw videos of himself.

I think some of his views in interviews come across as pretentious, but by all accounts he’s very nice and personable to fans. My dad met him at an album signing in Newbury Comics and got me an autograph, and said he was plenty interactive with everyone there.

I think we all need to come alive to the idea that social norms often don’t apply or are difficult to some people and especially neurodivergent people. Yeah it could be weird on the surface but to him he might just be trying his best! He could be neurodivergent. I’m all for being accountable if you’re just a straight dick, but I’m not for this all or nothing attitude with people in general. He could have had a really bad day and you perceived him as being a dick when he didn’t mean to. What if he’s neurodivergent and he doesn’t tell people? Bottom line, was he a dick? Or just neurodivergent? Or maybe both? Sometimes it’s just as simple as him just being weird on stage and mean to you in person.

He’s got pretentious views but I’ve never seen or heard anything that would warrant just righting Steve off like that. Of course there ARE people that have every intention of being assholes for no reason or just to assert dominance not saying that doesn’t exist. But just throwing it out there as an olive branch.

Yeah, I don’t think we should necessarily assume neurodivergence if there’s no concrete evidence, but also there are legitimate signs to ‘uncover’ (or whatever) if you choose to / actually know what to look for (I have no opinion on this guy specifically, btw). Idk maybe we should all just be more accepting of ‘quirkiness’ or something.
