That isn't pretentious. Sure it is just trying to be catchy pop, but if I tried to draw a picture as well as a 5 year old and managed to do it, people wouldn't be praising me left right and centre if you get what I'm saying
Comparing pop music to a 5 year old's drawing, think that's where your problem lies dude. Maybe Base wasn't too far off in saying you think you're above pop?

OK if you want a serious answer then I'll tell you how I see music. There isn't a great deal of music I actively hate. In fact I can't really think of anything off the top of my head apart from stuff that is a blatant cash grab.
I think all different genres have situations that they're suited to. Club music isn't bad, it's just best in a club. Pop music is not bad, it's just best suited to chilling with friends/pre-drinking/on tv - that kinda thing. Jazz would not work in that situation if you get me.
I try and find the context of everything I hear. If you put The Mars Volta on at a party everyone's gonna hate it. if you put it on with your mates when everyone's stoned it'll go down better. Just because you hear something in the wrong context doesn't mean it's bad.
Yes, i don't think that most pop music takes as much skill to make as some other stuff, but it does what it does well very well and that's cool with me. I know writing a catchy melody isn't as easy as it sounds, but it's not as difficult as using complicated musical aspects and theory to create a piece of classical music. If you judged music like that though, no-one would ever be able to justify liking any sort of music but classical the best. That isn't how music works though.
I do, however, like music that does something a bit different on purpose. If they manage to still work within the genre's context but try and push boundaries and still succeed. that is what makes the best albums.
This is safe, decent, catchy and fun. Great. But it doesn't do any of that boundary pushing stuff. Not even slightly. That's why i don't get the random ton of praise people are giving it here especially. That added to most of the conversation not being about music at all but about the dances and the 'look' and I think you might understand why I'm so far off about this?

Nah dude I hear ya. Cool explanation. One thing though, when people talk about how kawaii etc she is, it's usually tongue in cheek and when it comes to people's enjoyment of this, the music is first and foremost.
