Idk, I'm German. We haven't been allowed to laugh since we lost the war and they build that wall in East-Berlin.
Plus hipsters don't exist where I live.

pfft, dark. You haven't seen Ernst Röhm's vinyl affairs.
"man, I wish I had hipster friends. or just more people who like music that isn't on the radio..."
why would you give two flying fucks about what your friends listen to if they are your friends? my friends could listen to red solo cup for all I care.

Usually I try make friends with similar interests. I thought that's how most people do it at least. It's no fun to like something and not be able to share it with other people.

I dunno, I want to talk about music with someone irl at some point.

I mean having stuff like music taste in common can be fine & dandy but I think people are overrating how much of an influence that has. especially since similar taste doesn't necessarily mean similar level of interest/passion for it.
"Usually I try make friends with similar interests. I thought that's how most people do it at least. It's no fun to like something and not be able to share it with other people."
There are a gazillion things you could have in common with someone on various different levels - not all of them are obvious. The point is not that having things in common is a bad thing, it's that having such a "superficial" thing in common doesn't mean jackshit. Plus surrounding yourself with yes-men and people who have the same opinion about the same things as you is boooooooooooooooooooring. (and will likely stop such people from progressing in various areas)
I mean don't get me wrong, surrounding yourself with negative nancies who are being drags all the time isn't a good proposition either but there's a pretty versatile spectrum in between these two ends.

yeah, I have an odd habit of making friends with people I don't actually share a lot in common with.
not complaining about the friends I do have because they're awesome.

Idk man, I don't think this is necessarily odd. Like, you can have something in common with someone without realizing much of that - that's pretty much a matter of perspective. Like, I don't give a fuck about computer programming or working on cars and motorcycles but I'll still be able to listen and follow what a good buddy of mine is talking about because he's passionate and he knows his shit in and out.
