the time i saw them i think elliot was on vox (some dude with long hair) and he was horrendous. could barely even hear him and when you did it was really whiney and gay. then again i think he sounded whiny and gay on the EP

I've seen them with Dan and this guy. Dan was better in every way. Not that the new guy can't sing, I just think he hits notes that don't go with his voice. Almost like he is singing in a different key.

Some of the youtube videos Tompkins has put he's put up lately aren't flattering though. His falsetto sounds really weak all of a sudden.

I assume you mean the live in studio version of Maeva? He wrote a wall of text about why that song's a nightmare to sing live as soon as he posted the vid.

Haven't heard much of Ashe outside of this and while he's definitely a very good singer, I haven't heard anything that puts him above Dan for me. Haven't seen either guy live though, so he might be the better live singer for all I know.

Yeah that was partly it. But it wasn't just that. Was watching videos from Euroblast and the vocals were a bit underwhelming. And that really surprises me because I saw Skyharbor live (and then watched videos from the show) late in 2012 and he was a beast.

Yeah, a lot of the live clips seem underwhelming to me as well, but I kind of wonder if that's due to the poor sound-quality in most of them, because everyone I've talked to who's seen him live says he's been great. A friend of mine attended the UK Tech Metal Fest last year and told me he put on the best performance of the festival, so I'm not quite sure what to think about him as a live performer.

I'm hoping it was just sound quality and it's not like anyone expects him to be perfect live. Still, it's a worrying sign. The guy is a very dynamic and compelling performer, but if his voice is deteriorating...

I think he is very uneven performance-wise. When he was with tesseract he would either kill it or kind of struggle. He did pretty good when I saw them w periphery but Spencer was way better (I'm not really a fan of Spencer though). And I've seen studio/live footage where he is similar, great or meh.

I actually like how they stick to the melodic vocals even over the heavier or more technical parts. It gives them a unique identity.

its cool but it wears very thin before the album ends. i think some more varied vocals would have helped this a lot, the instrumental work is pretty sweet.

It could use more varied vocals, but how deep are vocalists that just scream with no change in tone

or pitch for most of the time? Listening to this, I really think the vocals are used in a similar

way as straight screaming would, but on the opposite side of the spectrum. Instead of constant anger

you get constant peace, and it never sounds superficial or over done. From there you can talk about

the lyrics, though honestly I have no idea what most vocalists are saying most of the time.

I don't think you can criticize the blandish yet consistent clean vocals when Meshuggah does the

same thing with their harsh vocals.
