"You know I couldn't get into Malina like you guys. With every album they just seem to lose more of the spark that I loved about them"
I'm still not understanding what it is you don't like about Malina. Those staccato-like riffs are highlighted throughout from the more linear, poppier song structures. Idk, man... it jams. It's such a triumph of an album.

Maybe I answered it... You're not a fan of Leprous' more "linear" song structures. I get that. Can come off less adventurous or interesting.

I really dug Malina but it was Pitfalls that didn't ever click with me

Yea, haven't really gotten into Pitfalls yet. It's great music in it's own right, but not exactly the vibe I'm looking for when I want to jam some Leprous.

how similar are their first 2 albums compared to this/congregation?

First two are pretty off the wall in comparison. They were really jumping around in songs and experimenting. Bilateral is their most wild, I'd say. They were still discovering their sound with Poppy Syndrome. Fun jams.

Very stylistically different, neither are nearly as streamlined or "mature" as Coal/Congregation.
Tall Poppy Syndrome is pretty good but doesn't stand out as a very original Leprous project.
Bilateral is chaotic blend of ideas, in the best possible way. I have yet to hear a record like it and it's probably my favorite of theirs.

You haven't jammed early Leprous choc? Damn could have sworn I saw you on those threads years back

hmm think i should proceed with caution then. I've gone off prog that's off the walls without a fair share of grit and growling but i gotta complete the discog.
As long as there are a few jams, i'll be happy
@omair maybe i might have stumbled across it but it probably never stuck and just let it disappear from my mind. I'm a lot more patient these days at least

Dude Bilateral is a must listen for any fan of metal or creative music in general. It can take a few listens to digest so it's good you're more patient now

I relistened yesterday and for some reason I enjoyed it a whole lot more than in the past. Idk why, but maybe it took years to just click? Confusing

True. Having listened only Coal, it was difficult for me to get into Bilateral, but it's really one of the most rewarding albums in their discog and in prog metal in general
Also, I thought Choccy was a huge proghead, but maybe I only saw you in Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson threads? I had the impression you knew Leprous in and out, too

I actually am but Leprous seemed to have escaped me until last year and yeah I missed out. Solid discog and just need to get through their debut to complete the lot.

TPS is an okay Opeth tribute, tbh. Well executed and with many flaws composition-wise, it's nowhere near what Bilater would be, only two years later.

Sometimes that's good though. If I'm backtracking a discog, the last thing I want is to peak early and the rest is more of the same but significantly worse

Leprous peaked early, because Bilateral was only their second album, but they are a band of change, so it's never the same. Malina ''almost'' was the same, and yet still it wasn't.

Need to jam this again. Pretty much only listen to Bilateral and Pitfalls these days, depending on the mood those two just scratch their respective itches better than anything else they done

"scratch their respective itches"
I like that description. Two polar opposites from the band in terms of style and themes
I don't come back to their full albums often nowadays but rather various songs from their discog

Hear you there, particularly for this through Malina. All got their standouts but the stuttering chug guitar style really gets exhausting to sit through for an hour at a time. Glad they’ve moved away from it, hope they keep exploring
