this record brings to the forefront a dilemma in the very purpose of musical criticism: is it to hold against our own standards, or to analyze from the perspective of the target audience?
That's not a good point, it has nothing to do with the album. Let's answer this on a case-by-case basis:
A) Hold it against our own standards: Then it's a worthless review, as people bashing the fuck out of it are warranted in doing so.
B) Perspective of the target audience: If this is true then what's the point of musical criticism? There's a target audience for everything, if it's teenage girls then shit dressed up with a semi-decent hook justifies a 4, if it's club-goers then the standards are even lower. How can you even argue it's a bad album, sure St. Anger was an abomination and it may have turned off 90% of their fans but hey you just weren't who the music was intended for!
C) A bit of both: If this is the case then there's no fuckin' way this record is excellent, based on his criticisms of the album yeah? So it's still a shit review.
I'm not saying B) isn't a valid perspective, it is but it renders music criticism worthless so there's no point even considering it in our context as musical critics? Why bother with reviews if you believe B, so I'm saying throw that option out, and the other two mean this review is worthless
