@trif i guess that's the word i would use to describe his later output, tbf it applies to his earlier stuff though, the way the pads and string arrangements and stuff swell if that makes sense. and often when something is cinematic people don't feel it as much or it doesnt seem as soulful etc. so dont mean to project that here just kind of how it made sense in my head. i guess i just don't really understand describing his new sound as generic. the beats are just different ie dance influenced instead of trip hop influenced

like to me this one is like black sands with different style of beats if that makes sense. don't see how that makes it generic

Hmmmm ok, I get what you mean perhaps but I don't agree. I do think there are many more artists going for that particular beat driven style, while his jazzier style was more unique I think. In that sense his later albums are more generic.

I do not have a problem with cinematic sounding stuff at all, quite the opposite. I mean, The Cinematic Orchestra shows beautifully how that heavily jazz influenced style can be super cinematic yet super soulful. And there's early trip hop (Portishead of course! also Massive. Archive) that's super cinematic and super heartfelt and genuine too. It's more that something is missing for me from his post Days to Come stuff, and I find those albums more boring, bland, and indeed a bit generic. I don't know how to explain it in a different way. I'll think about it some more.

I appreciate the words trif, and I'm probably nitpicking on the generic thing honestly but I'll try to better describe what I'm getting at:

Yes, the dance sound he's moved towards is saturated, for sure, but I think the same could be said about that world-y, jazzy trip-hop sound from the '90s and early 2000s where he got his foothold. To me it seems like you're basing him 'becoming generic' on a nostalgia/preference for his trip-hop stylings, as opposed to the house/garage stylings he's moved towards. The way I see it, the emotive/soulful aspect of Bonobo's music has remained consistent throughout his different eras...sort-of-kind-of-there and also sort-of-kind-of-not, but always very pretty and enjoyable. Put another way: Bonobo has always been a bit generic, and labelling one era as more or less so on grounds of musical sincerity seems unfair or inaccurate to me.

My argument is indeed problematic since so much of the way we use words like "generic" is based on taste which is subjective, but from what I know of your taste, despite our numerous overlaps, you do generally skew away from house and garage. I think when I read your comment on the last page (which by the way was totally inoffensive), my inner genre defender came out and was like "hey, wait a minute! that ain't the right word!" Perhaps what I'm illustrating is overall a false equivalency on my part, but I couldn't and still can't ignore my instinct that there was/is something else at play here.

This actually reminds me of an SOTD thread many months ago where you rec'd a tune from some instrumental jazz trio and in my rating of it I made a comment to the effect of "oh another boring modern jazz trio making modern instrumental jazz music, boring, generic, zzz" etc which left you a bit miffed (though I know you took it on the chin as we are bosom buds around here). So I'm guilty of the same thing for sure, and even in an immature way sometimes, but in this instance, I do enjoy both of his eras and find myself defending a more balanced perspective.

Anyway, I'm going to stop now before I ramble way too much (oops i think i did already!), and i think we will ultimately have to agree to disagree, but I hope this helps clear things up a bit ; )

‘Yes, the dance sound he's moved towards is saturated, for sure, but I think the same could be said about that world-y, jazzy trip-hop sound from the '90s and early 2000s where he got his foothold‘

Fair point here, to be honest you could definitely make legitimate arguments that either sub-genre has often descended into well-trodden ‘generic’ tropes. And I do think what you’re saying about preference sometimes rings true. We are all biased by default after all, it’s impossible not to be.

Migration was bonobo at his most diluted, commercial, lowest common denominator in his whole career. There was maybe one or two worthwhile tracks. Shit was garbage. The singles for the new one alone make it look like it’ll be a little bit better but not a whole lot

I actually skipped on Migration when it came out, was thinking of jamming it today. I gave the new one a 3.5 it's somewhere between a 3 and 3.5 for me, won't likely return to it but it went down pretty smooth and had some cool moments

I just finished it. Gonna listen back to Migration (which I’ve never made it the whole way through in a sitting) and see how it compares now after a couple years.

New one was as benign as expected but pleasant as usual. It’s still got a lot of problems typical of post elevator music Bonobo, not the least of which being the fact that he releases 80% of the meat of the album as singles, most of which are clumped together, a trend which tends to ruin the novelty of first impressions with an album. It’s a pretty limp-dicked affair with only a couple real hard-ons (when the o’Flynn track drops for instance) but my gut tells me it’s better than migration.

The joji song is fucking garbage tho…
