Funny how the new album is only a few minutes longer than this, because it feels at least 20 minutes longer. Ngl, I found it really boring and homogeneous

I mentioned with Ariana’s new album that I consider 30-40 minutes 9-12 songs the perfect length for a pop record. 20/20 worked as an exception to that rule, which I can explain if interested (best way to look at it is each song contains more than one “song” and those parts are fairly contained and precise, which gives it a feel of concision despite its length).
But this new album is the polar opposite of that idea in the worst way possible. Not only does the album drag on and on, even the individual songs develop into completely unnecessary tangents that get old after like 15 seconds or less. Pretty much garbage.

basically the difference between making an album long as hell because you are inspired to do so, versus feeling obligated to do so

Well said Nol.
20/20 pt 1 had so much going on. At their heart, were conventional pop songs that were catchy and well-produced in the ways that you would expect, but the album consistently went above and beyond to turn those simple tracks into cinematic experiences with an impressively fleshed out progression. Some of the songs go to some really unexpected places.
I don't wanna say that the structure and production "hid" Justin's.....Justin Timberlake-ness, but it definitely made it so there was more to chew on. New album truly is just shooting from the hip with as many similar ideas as possible with no attempts to make them anything else than what they are (fitting for an album named that lol). 20/20 pt. II also didn't work because the songs sucked, but I also treat that as more of a b-sides than anything. It's a damn shame the fall from grace this career has had lol

For the new album I knew it would probably not be a return to form of sorts, or reach the heights of his previous records, so I was hoping that there would at least be 4-5 fun and decent tracks.
I have to say, mission achieved. There's good stuff there, but the whole thing being 18 tracks is completely unwarranted lol. The biggest issues with this is the bloated runtime, the almost zero cohesion and flow between tracks and Justin's lyrics. Some of these lines are straight up horrible lol

It’s been a while since I’ve listened to this, but to my recollection this is so lush compared to other pop releases. Like so much is going on, and it’s almost all excellent. A lot of his other stuff including the new one is just bland derivative pop most of the time

There's nothing better than this in the last 20 years of pop/ r&b. It was bold, innovative and boundary pushing, which can be scarcely said of any other release in the genre in the 2000's
