Honestly surprised this album didn't become a big meme this year.
I would have thought it might have a comeback.

yo I dig Blue Ocean Floor so much, but there’s better songs even on this album. But what are they ... 🤔🧐🤔

Glad you asked, Nol! To me, this album is defined by a maximalist approach to songwriting. Everything is saved, pent up, for an ultimate breakdown that explodes in tasteful tones, tunes, and technicality. If there’s ever an instrument or musical idea that feels like it’s being held back, it’s because it’s storing energy, waiting for it’s perfect moment in the spotlight to rip loose and show off how fucking talented and tasteful they are, even if it’s just for a couple seconds.
But “Blue Ocean Floor” doesn’t fit that description. It’s a song of subtleties on an album that is constantly trying to impress you. It’s the emotional ending to a movie revered for its action scenes. The Devil’s Advocate in me wants to say, “But that’s why it’s best, it shows even when grand displays are subdued and submerged, the disparate sounds still create something equally beautiful.” And the demons may have a point. But deep down, I’m drawn to this due to its confidence. I like it Big, Bold, and Beautiful.

I’ll never forget how much this blindsided everyone on sput when it released

It pretty much blindsided the music world at large, honestly. Suddenly Justin comes out of nowhere with these long complex prog-pop songs and that's something I don't think anyone could have predicted. Then again, considering this was the same year Random Access Memories came out, I guess people were just in the mood for longer pop songs with a more complex slant at the time

never listened to this dude but I sorta like Dillinger escape plans cover of one of his songs

was this the first big victory in pop's war against sput users' stereotypical taste?
