the 30 seconds after ~6:47 at the first movement is still the best thing in the history of ever
|
| |
isn't everyone's version going to be different though
|

usually yes but there are surviving records of rachmaninoff performing this himself though.
in any case any professional recording will be similarly tempoed, so ~6:47 should hold true for any recording you find on youtube that's popular.

what's the best version?
or should I try to find an original?

you can look for rachmaninoff playing his own piece:

if the static bothers you (i don't think there's a HQ recording left unfortunately) you can just type "rachmaninoff piano concerto #2" on youtube and listen to the first result, that one is also quite good. (note it's about 31 min long, each movement's about 11 min. i rec listening the whole thing in its entirety but if you have to break it down, stop listening after the end of one movement [it's obviously when a movement ends])

np hope you like it, like all classical it's hard to say it's immediate but this is pre accessible for a piano concerto

Toxin., definitely go for Prelude in C# Minor before trying this, both wonderful compositions. Amongst my favs.
The opening moments of this concerto are so wonderfully dark and beautiful. Love it.

despite my training i'm probably about 5 years (of serious practice) away from being able to do this any justice. i probably couldn't play prelude in c# minor quite yet either, my technique's way too sloppy---especially as i speed up.
and yeah the first movement of this is fucking amazing

The best. It was a redefining moment for me the first time I heard it.

3rd movement has to be my 2nd favorite movement of the composition.

i thought the same but idk the 2nd was transcendent on quality headphones (yes i'd been listening on shitty laptop speakers before :[ ) so now idk

Best way to hear that movement or the whole piece in general (a solution that worked for me) was seeing if performed live by an orchestra. I heard it when it was performed live by Chicago's Symphony Orchestra and it was just sublime.

Also, @Sir Arthur, I managed to perform Prelude in C Sharp Minor in concert at age 16 about 95% accurately. It's been a while since I've been that good at piano.
