Seems like people were all hyped over Rival Dealer for like two weeks then completely forgot about it.

Hell, this might be better than Kindred. So spacey, with so many great moments and motifs spread across the two tracks. This guy is a master.

I went through a phase of liking this more but nowadays I think Kindred is marginally better although they are very different. I hope he returns to his more urban/melancholy feel on his next release, still loved Rival Dealer though, and yes, Burial can do no wrong

Rival Dealer is next in my list. When I finally go to London I'm just gonna spend my night times strolling through the streets jamming Burial's discog.

This is still such an awkward listen

I suppose it can be a little jittery and schizophrenic the way he jumps between ideas, but to me it sounds like a genius taking random ideas from a well of musical creativity and somehow piecing them together into a cohesive whole.
Based on other reviews you obviously love his early material, why the comparative indifference here?

When the synths and gospel style part kick in about 6:30 into Truant.

I think there's as much of an underlying concept here as on any of his other works, but I feel as if too obviously handled. And I feel as if the whole multi-diverse suite aspect that he began with his Massive Attack collabs was perfected with 'Ashtray Wasp'; the constant "crumple up and start over" sketch book vibe going on here is just too much. Music never needs to follow a simple pattern, but here the glue binding everything is tenuous at best, and completely unjustified beyond extending a track's length.
In all fairness, most of that is aimed at 'Truant', 'Rough Sleeper', while using the same aesthetic, handles it better

That's a valid point, and I agree that Rough Sleeper is a better representation of this style than Truant. I suppose it comes down to the age old adage of one man's average being another man's gold - your criticisms are one of the things I love about this. I love how jarringly discordant the material is here, leaping from idea to idea without giving you a second to catch your breath.

The last few minutes of Rough Sleeper are so fucking perfect.
