most Eels' records, save Electro-Shock, have a bright side.
E's sad-sap-who-finds-meaning schtick is getting old.

More poor timing from me. My review is ready to go tonight. This one is very good though, and the album is perhaps one of their best.

Holy shit AggravatedYeti sighting!
"E's sad-sap-who-finds-meaning schtick is getting old."
Being an artist with a horribly tragic family life kind of gives you a pass to write as much sad music as you want.

No, no it does not, cannot agree there.
E's personal story adds to why he is so compelling, but it is his ability to constantly find happiness within his turmoil that has made Eels so exceptional for the most part.
Here it seems like he's just happy, because well, after the last trilogy, he can't be sad anymore right?
"Bombs Away," "Peach Blossom," "True Original" and "You're My Friend" are pretty boss. The rest of this sounds like shittier versions of better Eels songs, personally.

I guess I see where you're coming from. After two additional spins I'm upping it another.5. It's his
best album since Souljacker imho. I'd give it a 3.8 if I could. It's at least on par with
Shootenanny!.

There were one or two tracks I blanked out on but I thought the overwhelming majority were entertaining.
