Following a number of projects, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted looks to settle down in a band which carries his own name. Produced by the front-man himself, the trio's debut 22 minute EP 'Metal' is apparently the 1st of 3 introductory EPs. Carrying an old-school vibe, Newsted's influences are varied; ranging from speedy thrash to groovier doom, with Black Sabbath being an apt comparison. Like the musicianship, Jason's vocals are competent, even if these 4 tracks aren't exactly original or exciting. There is enough to suggest, however, that the band can evolve & carve out their own identity. Recommended Tracks: King of the Underdogs & Soldierhead.

EP blew my mind, and then the full album came out... On the bright side, it coerced me into checking out Newsted's post-Metallica career and took a liking to Voivod's "Katorz" which subsequently re-introduced me to giving Voivod a second chance as I wasn't into them when they first came out.

Giving this a 5 is definitely overrating this and the LP is just more of the same, so I don't see how it's disappointing. Both were solid releases that are fun to jam every now and again
