I'll also add that even if I agreed with the review, it still stinks.

This may be a stupid question, but what does everyone mean with 12345??
GREAT review by the way.

And yeah, the lyrics aren't great, but if we get rid of every band that has bad lyrics, we are left with:

how right you are, there isn't a single band that has made a recording with good lyrics :thumb:
This may be a stupid question, but what does everyone mean with 12345??
well, there's a 5 character minimum on posts, you need 5 letters to have a post. So when someone just wants their post to be a quote, they put 12345 to let the post go through. Eventually 12345 just became to mean that you agree.

Nice review.

Long, but not essay length, and much better than track-by-track.

Actually I do understand sarcasm. But his statement could've been true, excluding APC. Now there, smartass.

No, I guarantee he did not mean that no band has ever recorded an album with good lyrics except APC. It was simply sarcastic, as represented by this guy: :thumb:
First off, 3 Day's Grace is not pop-punk or anything

But more importantly, you've disgraced the rest of these bands (except GC) by comparing them to Hoobastank
He sure didnt disgrace simple plan! They r a bunch of girls! And hoobastank has songs that r better then any three days grace songs.

This is a crapshoot

I saw 3 Day's live, and they were pretty good. I own the first Hoobstank record, and I would agree that those songs are better than 3 day's...

But this new crap is not...so

"Instead of wasting your time and my time, I’ll summarize the rest of the record with a few broad statements"

Sorry, you lost me. Nobody wants to read "broad statements" about anything- otherwise high school girls would be the authority on most things.

The thing about bands like this is authenticity. Hoobastank, on their first cd, sold it to me. It was simple, but I believed them. I still believe them on about half of these songs, but I can't forgive them for that son of a bitch second single. ****ers.
Hoobastank is not a rip-off of incubus at all. They don't really sound anything like them.
I listened to Hoobastank's first cd the whole way through once without knowing what it was, and afterwards I said "Wow, Incubus has really gone downhill"

The Reason is one of the most boring songs I have ever heard, a generic new rock ballad dumbed down for the TRL crowd. The sad thing is my friends listens to this and then critisizes Zeppelin for being boring...what a sorry state music has become.

I don't listen to Hoobastank much anymore. After 'Basketball Shorts...' I was waiting for them to release a new album. Then they released their self-titled, which wasn't so bad. It was listenable and had some shiners. I hoped their third release would...well, lets just say I was disappointed.

So here I am, with Basketball Shorts, pretending modern-day Hoobastank doesn't exist.

CD Review: Hoobastank – The Reason

This is the type of music where ignorance thrives. Unknowledgeable people flock to the boring, trite post grunge from the likes of Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, and Hoobastank. They find comfort in the repetitious power chords and the uninspired lyrics about watered down teenage angst. Unfortunately, this ignorance is running the current mainstream music scene.

The worst flaw a band can have is to lack innovation. Hoobastank does nothing for post-grunge, alternative rock, or top 40 pop/rock. They simply rehash what they’ve heard and what has generated them their platinum-selling success. While this is definitely going to pay their bills, it’s ultimately going to leave their listeners feeling empty and looking for another band to fill their stereo.

Chances are most people interested in this album came from the self-titled single, "The Reason". This track is an ordinary, bland rock ballad. Douglas Robb generated these embarrassingly generic and clichéd lines: "I’ve found a reason for me, to change who I used to be / a reason to start over new, and the reason is you". While there is nothing wrong with a love song, there is something wrong with a love song filled with a fourteen-year-old’s poetry. It really is just an insult to the listeners intelligence that Hoobastank finds the need to dumb down their lyrics to this level.

Instead of wasting your time and my time, I’ll summarize the rest of the record with a few broad statements. All tracks consist of power chords and amazingly simple song structure. All the songs are also filled to the brim with adolescent anger/love/confusion based lyrics. Here are a few key excerpts: "Where should I go? What should I do? / I don’t understand what you want from me", and my personal favorite "I need to think / I need to feed / I need to see if I still bleed". The reason I’ve put such emphasis upon the lyrics of Hoobastank’s release is that, sad to say, they are the highlight of the disc. It’s because they are infinitely more interesting than the crunched power chords littered throughout nearly every chorus on every song.

So, instead of spending your hard-earned cash on Hoobastank, look around for something new. Maybe go towards the edgier, originators of indie/grunge the Pixies. Specifically, look for the Pixies sophomore album Doolittle and the tracks "Debaser", "Wave of Mutilation", and "Here Comes Your Man". If you’re more interested in a band with pop sensibilities and a brighter tone then look no further than the Super Furry Animals. Their most recent release, Phantom Power, is full of bright upbeat pop/rock songs including the fantastically catchy "Golden Retriever", "Slow Life", and "Hello Sunshine". Or maybe look into the aggressive indie rock of the Constantines, or At the Drive-In’s influential hard hitting compositions, or the quirky indie pop of Modest Mouse, or the unclassifiable/experimental TV on the Radio, or even the psychedelic Flaming Lips. Let’s use the failure that is The Reason and turn it into a chance to find something new and innovative.

Thanks for reading.
Really. I don't think it should be criticized to heavy-heartedly. Sounds to me like you're saying any fourteen-year-old would enjoy the CD. Complication of the song doesn't merit whether or not the song is good. In my opinion, whether or not the song gets its moral across is the key. As a songwriter myself, making up lyrics for a song could take several months. Currently, my band and I are creating a couple of songs we've been working on for two months now, and are still stuck with lyrics. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears go into the making of a song, not to mention finding a studio to produce an album in. Either way, Hoobastank's got it down. In this country, it doesn't matter how cheesy it truly is; if it makes money, it makes money. Look back about thirty years ago at the "pet rock" idea. The guy who made it up was getting drunk at a bar with his friends and they started talking about the painstakingly boring procedures of caring for a pet daily. So they decided a pet rock would the be the easiest to take care of. Of course, the American society loved the idea, and now some guy's sitting in a penthouse with a whole pocket full of very pretty pennies because his idea was stupid, but people liked it. Now. I, personally, don't dislike the CD. But neither can I say it's my favorite. I believe that musicians should get more positive opinions on their work...because now, they've got lots of money because of something they hardly did any work on, and you're criticizing them for it.
-Mr. Smiley and That One Band from Arkansas send their compliments.

I listened to Hoobastank's first cd the whole way through once without knowing what it was, and afterwards I said "Wow, Incubus has really gone downhill"

You, sir, are an idiot! Well, okay, I have no idea if you are an idiot, but I can't believe you thought that. The only thing that sounds the same is the terrible lyrics...

And yes, plenty of bands have good lyrics, I was kind of exagerating (I know I spelled that wrong...).

The Reason is a good song though. First, simplicity is not bad. Second, it sounds good. Third, the lyrics are cheesy, but no matter what people tell you, HUMANS LIKE CHEESE!! If we didn't, there wouldn't be so many cheesy songs. Finally, yeah, it has gotten way too much radio time.

As a whole, the album is incredibly enjoyable to listen to. I also love their first album.

And if people didn't like power chords, there wouldn't be so many bands tha abused them. But I for one love power chords!
