Hope The Carny is suitably unsettling! Happy trails!

Hell yeah, widowslaw
Feels like all these early Cave records have the one song that stands on all the others’ shoulders. Title track here, Tupelo, The Carny, The Mercy Seat...
Dude was terrifying back in the day lol

I don't love Carny, but most people seem to enjoy it. The Mercy Seat slaps, though.

I just adore The Carny for how much that whole song smells like death.
Creepiest fucking glockenspiel line, I swear to God

Lol I see you, Cole. Just have to turn that Springsteen one into a gangrenous death waltz and you’re there!

have you ever seen Der Himmel über Berlin, it's got a scene where Nick and company are performing "The Carny" and "From Her to Eternity" in some Berlin club and there are angels present and everything

yeah I should rewatch that too, it's been years... come to think of it I think seeing that was what sparked me to check them out again... I wasn't able to really appreciate this back when I was in high school I think I just thought it was off-putting and freakish and nasty (which it is) and deleted it

that bit about the peg leg in cabin fever is just so brilliant
so cleverly claustrophobic
i don't care about the greater Nick Cave songbook tbh I mostly listen to this and niiiiiiiick the striiiiiiiiiperrrrrrrrrrrr & get mega-diminishing returns from the following albums, mainly feel myself listening out for Blixa doing stuff
but frankly this is enough, genius album

Having only heard a handful of Nick Cave albums (maybe 50% of em, randomly spread through his chronology) and arrived at the same conclusion each time - i.e., talented musician who makes good, somewhat compartmentalized music that simply isn’t to my personal tastes - I am very happily surprised to be enjoying the hell out of this so far.

u ever listen to the birthday party?

Album Rating: 4.0
Nope, just learnt of them actually (based on RYM comments that this kinda sounds like them), so I’ll definitely be checking them out asap. Could never totally latch on to Nick’s bluesy cadence and almost cabaret song-style, and this is pretty much devoid of all that lol.

yea he started from the postpunks, got more tom waits in the 90s
i tend to like both tbh but the early stuff is underrated hard

Fr, love just about all his stuff to bits, but the grime and scabs on the Birthday Party/early Bad Seeds where a lot of the Magic’s at

For sure. I think Cabin Fever and t/t are my favorites but the whole album is quality. Can see this getting a lot of spins in the future 👌🏻
