inarguably Metallica’s best release.

I mean I prefer Slayer personally, and I think Rust In Peace is the best album of this era for this genre, but I did always say that if Metallica remained on the same track they were on pre-Black album, they'd be one of my favorite bands of all time and close to the top

The only reasonable challenge imo would be Master of puppets vs Reign in blood. Song for song:
Battery vs Angel of death
Master of puppets vs Piece by piece
The thing that should not be vs Necrophobic
Sanitarium vs Altar of Sacrifice
Disposable heroes vs Jesus saves
Leper messiah vs Criminally insane
Orion vs Portmortem
Damage inc. vs Raining blood
I know what I'd be taking in every instance

ok another '86 comparison - is bad omen better than leper messiah? I suppose it's subjective but I'd say leper messiah sry budgie

Just wish this had some bass, it feels dry without it, especially coming after the albums before it.

I mean agreed, for sure. It's an old argument, but an old argument for good reason.
If this had bass, better production, and some drummnig that fit a bit better with the pace of the guitars and James' intense vocals, this would be like a fucking 100000/10

obvi i cant assess them outside of my perspective, but i liked the master album pretty good for like a month, but basically worshipped peace sells, ongoing, for the past 20 years lol. i was always a guitar nerd though and lines from the peace sells record were way more exciting than master. i guess i could recognize master is more charismatic bc creamier production sexy mesa boogie pre's into marshall power's (i had an almost identical signal line for a long time) and hetfield's voice is less uhh fringeappeal than mustaine's
but guitar lines, drumming, songwriting, just instrumentally in general peace sells is like a religious work and master is just "pretty sweet" to me

Totally. Both were part of my formative metal listening too. Wake up dead is one of my all time favs because of his riffing. Metallica didn’t riff like that but were more progressive which I dug

I am not really a metal guy, but yeah this album was cool. I used to play 'To live is to die' at bars a lot I think it was. Just sorta a burner song that wasn't too loud. Ok it was long too as most of these songs hehe
