"Idk, paying for a bunch of ones and zeros on my harddrive..."

If you want a physical copy (and I usually do if I'm buying music) then yeah, digital is kind of weak. But saying you're "paying for a bunch of ones an zeros" discredits the music in general instead of just the format you're opposed to. It's like saying that buying the mona lisa is just paying for a bunch of paint and canvas.

There's nothing wrong with paying for digital music at all. I usually prefer physical myself, but the two can co-exist.

I don't mind paying for the digital files if that's the only way I can get it, but it's always a last resort for me.

I'm kind of the same way, but also sometimes a physical costs way more than digital. It typically happens with smaller groups, where they're offering digital for $3-5, but physical is >$10 because pressing it costs quite a bit from them.

Most bigger acts will happily charge you the same amount for digital even though it costs nothing for them to produce. But if I'm looking to support an artist with a cheap as hell digital download then hell yeah I'll pay for it.

This. That's why I'm such a big fan of bandcamp. Most of the stuff there - if it actually costs anything is quite reasonably priced. (think Fanu's Serendipity which is a really varied album)

Hey, looks like I started a (sort of) heated discussion around here.

Firstly, I'm still a student, so I don't have too much money to spare. So if I spent money on music, it's either CD's, vinyl or concert tickets (so if you ever pass by here Jash, you know I'll be there). I downloaded the album for free already a week ago or so. But I still stream the album from the Bandcamp site from time to time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you also get some money from that, sorta like Spotify?

If I ever start earning (big) money, I'll probably start buying digital stuff as well, but now it's mostly a question of priorities, and my priorities lie with physical copies.

Also,

But saying you're "paying for a bunch of ones an zeros" discredits the music in general

Yeah, shouldn't have put it like that. Sorry Jash, don't take it personally.

Also, thinking about bumping this to a 4. First half except of Raindrops still drags a bit for me but second half is off the chain.

Dude, don't forget The Woods & Raindrops. But yeah, Giant Sun is like.. my favorite track off this. That percussion + that atmosphere. Also, perfectly fits to the weather we have here as of now.

Agreed

btw Wolf now that you're here, are you having trouble making a best of 2012 list too ( as in the 10 you need for the user list)? I find myself changing it every god damn day

I just bumped on a wealth of amazing ska and reggae releases from this year and argh

Amazing Ska and Reggae? Care to share? I mean I probably won't give em too much time right now but I'm always happy to have some more good Ska and actually get into Reggae.

Idk, I actually haven't started yet - not sure if I'm gonna make one but if I do I usually weed out anyway since I don't really do huge lists as you might know. And when it comes to the top of the crop the ranking loses weight anyway.

But talking top ten, Hidden Orchestra's latest, Billy Woods - History Will Absolve Me, Busdriver's latest EP (I'll 'break the rules' and mash EPs and albums), Fanu will probably also be on it, Portico Quartet. Not sure if metal/hardcore/anything of the like will make it into my top ten tbh. (Converge and Birds In Row are contenders though)

I will surely make a list about it one of these days but I'm gonna give you this: http://thebandulus.bandcamp.com/album/the-times-we-had

this: http://theforthrights.bandcamp.com/album/the-forthrights

and this: http://thefrightnrs.bandcamp.com/album/the-frightnrs (it's name-your-price so you can download it for free)

The main problem with these releases is that they are either limited-edition or simply not available online which makes it really hard for me to rec them to people...

I'll get back to you if I find a stream for the Maddie Ruthless Featuring the Forthrights and Friends! album because it rocks but I had to buy it which kinda sucks...

Oh and sucks you're no longer that into metal man :/

Sounds cool, will definitely check those out. Thanks!

I think you misunderstood me the other day when I said I wasn't THAT into it anymore. I'm saying I'm not as much into when I actually was a metalhead, I still listen to it - depending on my mood more or less - but especially for this year there hasn't been anything overwhelming. In general I still like to listen to some stuff like DSO, Immolation, Death, Bolt Thrower, High on Fire, Corrupted, Absus' latest (actually my most jammed m/ record this winter) and generally more 'groovy' stuff.

@clercqie I completely get that man, money doesn't fall into my hand that much either so I'm pretty much the same when it comes to buying my music, but if I find something on Bandcamp where the artist is awesome and doesn't have any big label backing I try and hook em up what I can. I am trying to get a limited vinyl run of "The Woods / Giant Sun VIP" so you can buy that when the time comes ;) For clarification I don't get any money through just streaming on bandcamp, only when it's purchased. And don't worry never took it personally, the 1's and 0's comment is referring to the files not my music. I just want people to hear it, I don't care if I get money off it because I didn't put money (aside from my studio gear) into the making/promoting of this album, whereas next time I plan to do that so there'll be a set price
