Yeah..at this point they're hardly breaking down new musical boundaries. But they have their own uniques sound, and they do it really, really fucking well. This is probably the best songwriting of their career.

Never been into this band, but this review makes me want to give them another chance. Pos'd.

Thanks guys. I agree that their music is hardly ever groundbreaking and they mostly rely on Chino's mad vocal skills... but this record is just so slickly written and produced.

Shit Greg, first decent review for this thing. Still haven't come round to this album although a huge Deftones fan, I'm going to come back to it in a month or so and it should make a bit more sense then

For now, Live at Sin-e (my desert island album) should hold me at bay

"I didn't start listening to the Deftones until this year really. SNW is so much more nuanced and subtle and it has a ton of layers and stuff going on, this is just a bunch of groovy downtuned riffs. It has none of the qualities SNW had."
Lolwut
I'm honestly having a hard time believing that someone would say this about the album that has the line:
"The germs and the poop, and the butt-fucking residue; Sin
And that is why British people have bad teeth, Amen"
In it.

It's nice that you cherry-picked a piece of a song that wasn't written by anybody in the band that you probably failed to grasp the entirety of, good job dude. I don't see what's so "lolwut" about the actual fact that this album doesn't incorporate ambience and heaviness as well as SNW did.

What is the hype with this album seriously?! It's fucking boring!!!

Its not really hype, the bands fans like it. You don't. Not really that big of a deal, listen to something that isn't boring. Try Burst.

Fair point man, it just seems to be 5'd so soon after release, not even standing time, whereas to my ears it sounds no different to SNW and Diamond Eyes. Big riffs, ambient sections, Chino being Chino, no progression.

The early 5s always happen when bands have a solid fan-base. I'm sure some folks truly feel it, others may change over time and some are probably just one time voters.
As for the record, I thought there was a huge difference between SNW and DE in structure and sound, I see this as more along the lines of DE writing mentality.
I definitely think it has the obvious Deftones sound but some of the patterns are much different then anything they have done. Took me a few listens, but I dig it.

I am a fan of the Deftones, I won't lie. I've seen them 3 times. Maybe I need to check it out a few more times.

The screaming parts in Leathers are annoying which is a shame because the chorus is beautiful.

You saying it's annoying is annoying because the screaming in the verses are awesome.
