I really can't stand this album. I've eaten up everything from MHTRTC and Geogaddi to their track on Slag Boom Van Loon and bootlegs from ATP and loved it, but I can hardly stand a full listen of this album in one sitting. I feel like they were trying too hard to escape from the archetype they had created, and in doing so created something that sounds like everybody else. Boards have always built upon the ambient structure of repetition with subtle variation, but while tracks like 'Music is Math' and 'Alpha and Omega' left me hungry for more, "Satellite Anthem Icarus' and 'Slow This Bird Down' make me ache for their tasteless repetition to end. There are redeeming traits. The stars of this album, for me, are the brief melodic etudes, namely 'Ataronchronon' and 'A Moment of Clarity.' They not only hearken to their eclectic take on the 4-chord, but stake new ground as a band; I would thoroughly enjoy another four minutes of 'Ataronchronon,' but 'Chromakey Dreamcoat' always feels as if its overstaying its welcome. The album, as a whole, adopts a typical structure of choruses and verses, but in doing so loses the very essence of what Boards of Canada is.

I rate this album at 4.5 as their worse album. Simply amazing duo. All of their works are groundbreaking. Please make a 4th LP!

HOPE THEY TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT AGAIN
I honestly don't care if they just make more of the exact same stuff, but if they do go in a new direction I'd really love to see what they do

that guy up there makes some decent points, this one is a bit homogenous, bordering easy listening. there's a few nice tracks but it lacks the density of old and i can't get lost in it like geogaddi or mhtrtc. wasn't really a boc fan at the time but i can imagine this would've been a big letdown after geogaddi. and yeah the little segues on this are still cool
