Well sure, one is straight-up OSDM and the other is prog to the point where the DM elements are very much diluted, it is still there though.

It's all dm bro

DM (like any genre) has developed over time, you can't just take what is considered DM now and apply that to albums made in the late 80s/early 90s. Maybe that's more obvious with BM, or to go off on a complete tangent post-rock - with the whole 1st/2nd wave stuff etc. but it's important to recognise when looking at the development of any genre.

all I know is Fenriz didn't like where Death went after Spiritual Healing which amuses me. This album is fantastic and it's still dm but gives more space to breathe. If this or Symbolic aren't dm to you then you must consider 'Heartwork' to not be dm?

Agreed Source. His vocals are one of the main draws for me (to my own suprise about a year ago)

I mean, it’s definitely melo-death and it’s a fair bit harder than a few of their ‘Gothenburgy’ contemporaries.

Later Death is thrashier and TSOP is prog/power, musically speaking. Chuck started sounding a lot more like Kurt Bachman or something from this album onward. I would still say Human is death metal though.

I detect no Bachman similarities

SBG is by far Death's thrashiest album, certainly has more in common with Slayer than any later-era Death. I mean, all early dm has a strong thrash element. I def don't see how SH/Human/ITP are any less death metal though. Sure, there's prog influence and the music is technical (esp on ITP) which wasn't present on SBG or Leprosy, but it's still unmistakably death metal.
I'd say Symbolic is really when Chuck turned up the prog and started moving away from dm, but I think prog/death is still appropriate for that album even if the dm aspect is toned down compared to ITP and others. TSoP is really the only one I can say isn't dm at all. As to his vocals, idk, he's def not my favorite dm vocalist but I love them. His vox on TSoP are grating for sure though.

^ this explains it well enough, definitely agree with pretty much all of this. SBG is their thrashiest, also...

Captain bloody obvious. Yes, you most certainly do. One of the greatest bands of all time, no question. As you are already familiar with DM, I'd just start at the beginning to see their evolution (I started with Symbolic, which is still my fave, but I was a pleb back then so Scream may have put me off, haha).

I was so impressed with their last 2 when I joined Sput, I gave them 5s because of the quality shown and the status that implied (ahahah)...but I'm admittedly not big on these guys X)

Yap...I'm def a poser here...you can always use that against me on further threads..I have to correct that for when the time comes (just putting the pressure on myself lol)
Their AVG's are simply amazing...

Just listen to their stuff chronologically. Demon made a good point there - you'll notice their evolution that way and appreciate how they peaked at Symbolic.
