I love the debut, but most people hate it. In some ways, it suffers from the same thing as CI by TDEP. It is relatively inaccessible in comparison to later SYL and is a bit of an assault on your ears.

Yeah the debut is my 2nd favorite SYL. It's very fun. Plus Cod Metal King is actually my favorite SYL song

lots of album are like this so i don't see the point of the comparison, they're not really alike in
any meaningful way

"COD METAL KING!"
MY fave changes everyday. Sometimes it is "Happy Camper" (which I linked), others it is "Sweet City Jesus" or "SYL" or "In the Rainy Season".

Okay, Gwyn, I will elaborate further.
HAARHT, Calculating Infinity and the first Mastodon EP which I can't be bothered to look up right
now share the following:
are the debut releases by well known metal bands
are deliberately inaccessible/rough around the edges
feature some of the most insane musicianship most people will ever hear
personify the the struggles and pissed off mindset of the musicians
are seen as garbage by those those who come around later
The major difference between HAARTH and the other is that HAART doesn't have a cult trying to tell
everyone else that their tastes are shit because said everyone don't shout their praises.
I am not denying that there are other albums that share these characteristics. I was just drawing a
loose comparison.

This all might be true, but these are all superficial similarities
You can do this with just about anything really, nitpicking can net you whatever result/answer you want
But my point was the fact that musically speaking they're not really similar in any, at least noticable, way, but of course using your logic it may seem like they're similar

Yes, I was making a superficial comparison. No, I don't think they sound similar literally.

i think it's really good. by no means one of his ground breaking albums, it wasn't meant to be, but is still a great collection of heavy and poppy rock songs.
