I think you're criticizing this album on something that it doesn't try to be. It's like you said, a fun poppy album. Exactly as Townsend intended. Nothing as deep and meaningful as you heard on Ocean Machine or Terria.
Well, like I said in the review, sometimes it's not enough. The entire suite that came before it had that personal investment and emotional connection (and Addicted managed to do so while maintaining that pop sensibility). As far as art goes, this really missed the mark and feels uninspired. Hell, I even think it's kind of boring as a standalone album from a "fun" perspective, but I can still see it, so that's why it's a 3 and not anything lower.
