I prefer Mer De Noms, but I don't really think you can compare the two albums. To me they have two entirely different concepts and sounds. But anyways...Thirteenth Step is a favorite cd of mine.
"Blue" has a great chorus. The rest of the song is a little dull but it's still one of my favorite songs on the cd for some reason, even if it is a "radio" song.
"Pet" is my favorite though. I love the double meaning within the lyrics. Although I don't agree with all of Maynard's political and religious views I appreciate the metaphors they put into the lyrics. Besides that, it just has great music put behind it.

The noose and pet are definately my favorite tracks.
Good review.

I would deffinitely say i prefer this album to Mer De Noms, it is more consistent. Other than the 2 fillers and that boring, throw away track 'The Nurse Who Loved Me', every song has something to say. Favourite would have to be 'The Noose'

This is the best album the mainstream rock has ever put out, plain in simple

It really is. It feels like it shouldn't be mainstream just because of how good it is. Everything about it is different than everything mainstream was when it came out, yet it was still hella popular. I think if The Noose was put out as a single, it would've been even more popular.

This album is sooooo beautiful! Gravity and The Outsider are my favourites, but I don't think the album has any real let-downs (unlike 1 of the 3 songs I heard off Mer De Noms, not sure what it was called, although I LOVE Judith). I can't quite pick a genre for this: Rock, Hard Rock, Folk Rock, Progressive, they're all there.
Mer De Noms is coming soon for me, but I can't see myself liking it as much as this.

there is some progressive influence in this no doubt, but just settle for calling this mainstream rock

This isn't really 'mainstream' rock though.

i think it is. 2 songs off this were big singles, especially Weak and Powerless which was all over the radios for a while. it doesn't sound like other mainstream rock, but that's still what it is

Sounds like alternative rock with hard, prog- and art rock influences to me. And yes, this album is very beautiful. This would probably be even better than it already is if Paz Lenchantin had contributed with violin or something.
