I think your criticism is generally valid. But in this particular case I think it's a counter-intuitive nit-pick that would ruin the album. It's great because it's so authentic. The late 70s and 80s pop renaissance in music has been going strong and will be for a long while. There are myriads of new subgenres that reinvision/reinvent those influences. At this point what you're asking for is actually vastly less fresh than a simple, honest, no frills love letter to a genre past. There are hundreds of albums a year that reevaluate and recontextualize synthpop, r&b, soul, etc etc etc. There are few that just pay simple homage and do so so masterfully and eloquently. It's focused, seamless, and refreshing.

Never listened to this artist before, but heard some crazy good things about her new album. Will check this and that. Also that Spotlight song is fantastic. Its smoothness reminds me of the 90s
