I keep debating between 3 and 3.5 for this
The first four tracks are quite enjoyable, but then it gets pretty dull
|
| |
boring pop songs ugh

if hash pipe wasnt on this it would be a solid 2.5-3

Hash Pipe destroys, yeah. So why couldn't they make the rest of the album half as good?

*2nd best
i think rivers just wanted to play it safe getting back into the music game so he made the most mainstream harmlessly
catchy album possible

ya that makes sense
its really the stupid critics fault for not realizing pinkertons genius at the time

"in the liner notes of alone 2 he basically says that in the period between pinkerton and green he was so upset with the reaction pinkerton got that he was striving to write emotionally distant "perfect pop songs" that anyone could listen to"
That really bothers me. Makes me hate the critics, but honestly, if Rivers were a true artist (at the time), he would have ignored them and done his own thing.

rivers whole aura is that of an insecure awkward nerd (not saying that in a negative connotation) so i can empathize with that

I don't see how coming back onto the scene with the lead single "Hash Pipe" was safe and mainstream in any way. I remember when it came out it was edited to hell on the radio.

Well, it used to be. Until he started trying to act all cool and rad with the drugs and partying and whatnot.

The Greatest Man That Ever Lived is the best example of Rivers acting like hot shit and pulling it off perfectly

"Well, you've got the Weezer/Weezy connection. But, more importantly, he really tapped into the spirit of the song, which I really struggled with at first. There was no sense of irony or darkness or tension in the first draft I heard from Jermaine. It was purely "whoo-hoo, let's drink, get stoned, and get it on," which is a fine sentiment, but I couldn't honestly put that out and have it be the end of the story. So I ended up turning the music into something dark and beautiful and haunting, which gave it a different meaning without changing the lyrics. Lil Wayne picked up on that and developed it with his rap." - RC
I get no sense of darkness throughout the song. Literally overproduced, big beats, tuned voice. Trying to be radio friendly.

Also, making the music "dark" doesn't help the shite lyrics
