this is a little free jazz. mostly avant-garde tho. either way brules rules
|
| |
no, this is just free-jazz.
|

I guess Shape Of Jazz's avant-garde status comes from how ahead of its time it was, and how it
basically started a freeform revolution that took weighty prominence in the 60's.

Actually, Gian, I wouldnt go as far as to call this album as 100% free jazz because there's quite a number of songs ("Lonely Woman"/"Peace") that still holds on to bop's harmonic structures. Sure, there's a lot of spontaneity and improve happening here, but its still pretty melodic. His 100% balls-to-the-wall free jazz would be this:

Sorry, I meant melodic, not harmonic*- no chords on this one.

well, in 1959 freeform jazz still borrowed from certain post-boppish precursors so that makes perfect sense. Ornette sure's got plenty of freaky stuff, though, some of which reminds me of Ascension. Coleman's most interesting contribution to jazz, though (imo -besides his obviously seminal outputs) is his compositional theory, `Harmolodyยด. It's very interesting stuff, I think you would enjoy reading some of it.

Yeah, Ornette got into some seriously crazy jams. I've heard of the harmolodic philosophy, I didnt know he published the book
though, or didnt it come out in the 70s (am I right on that? I dont even know), but I haven't read it. I might check it out one day.
I'm not really all that into free jazz though, I mean I like my share of albums of the style- you mentioned Ascension which is
definitely one of my favourites- but I feel as though some are too abstract/intellectual for my taste.

i'm not big on free jazz either. even some of Coltrane's mid 60s stuff I can only take in smaller doses. I love Pharoah Sanders' take on it though

That's pretty much me. If it's Coltrane, I go for his Bop stuff more than the latter experimental/free stuff. I have to be in the mood for it really. Honestly, I'm more into the bop and fusion styles of Jazz.

There's no book but several interviews and explanations online; thousands of players that worked with
him mentioned his passion for harmolodic unison etc/etc. Well, I'm more of-a avant-garde enthusiast
haha. It is an acquired taste for sure, as some people love free-improvs while others hate on them and
argue about how 'it is not music!' Truth be told, the experimental side of jazz is usually very
abstract in terms of composition and noisy for fans of more standard jazz. I love it, though, it's
freedom, a magnificent world of indeterminate sound. Check this out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=11dkb7t-yAk, one of my favorite players.
