I've never heard of Fela Kuti, but I really like these guys so I will look into him.

Actually "traditional" Jazz Fusion, the styles that were adapted by the defining bands of the 70's often mixed funk and R&B rhythms to the music along with Rock. Funk and Jazz went hand in hand in the mid 70s, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock even left behind the rock influences to move more into a Funk sound. Bands like The Weather Report and Miles also incorporated african music and tribal nuances with the music- that's why I said it was Fusion, because these characteristics have always existed in the genre.

Like I said I really dont much about Afrobeat, and you're certainly right about it being Afrobeat. And I apologize for not calling it that earlier. But if you take away the singing and compare just instrumentals to the latter stuff by The Weather Report or to Miles Davis' electric albums you can see a strong connection.

yeah my understanding was always that fusion was typically a mix of jazz and prog/rock

That's right. Early Jazz Fusion was really just Prog rock mixed with Jazz, but close to the mid 1970s this huge trend started in the Fusion scene where bands left behind the Prog-rock influences and started going for Funk sound. And from there band started getting incorporating Latin and African music.

@papes, weather report had some really ridiculous rhythmic stuff going on. honestly, i dont see much of a parallel between this and miles' 70s stuff/ weather report besides that they drew from funk. but still i'm glad you're getting into it

@Soby

Thanks. I'm always looking for good music to enjoy and thanks for brining Fela Kuti to my attention, so far I'm loving what I'm

hearing.

@Potsy

George Clinton played a big role in influencing Jazz Fusion to incorporate Funk elements into the music. Wayne

Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis themselves have admitted to being fans of George Clinton and vice versa. But to

answer you're question: no. Funkadelic and Parliament never really did anything with Jazz, theyre more like Funk and

"Psychedelic Funk". But I LOVE George Clinton to death.

And yeah this song rules Potsy, I think Fela Kuti may become my latest obsession.

I love world music, I think it's one of the most underrated genres on the planet, one that really deserves a lot more attention, so I will definitely be checking this out. Great review as always Hernan. Pos!
