It's already been stated but yeah, Eminem's success was the result of a combination of dozens of things on their own, take one out and he most likely wouldn't be as he was (is).
In general though, the controversy surrounded Eminem's character was definitely a bigger contributor to his recognition than his skin colour. I saw Em being talked about everywhere from people who lived near me to the news and it was always primarily about his persona, with his skin colour usually being a side note at best.
Also, he is easily one of the most technically skilled rappers in the history of mainstream hip-hop if not hip-hop as a whole, and when talent is forcefully displayed upfront many people will immediately associate that with quality, so that added a lot of mass appeal to his music.

I was never much of a fan of this album. I like Criminal, Kill You and Stan but, that's it. Everything else was skippable to me. That Steve Berman skit was okay with Marshall going through the struggles of his record not getting signed but, that's it. My biggest complaint? He was literally SHOUTING instead of rapping in the terrible "Kim" song. Literally shouting. Painful to listen to.
